I may be traveling to Amsterdam in the next few weeks and was curious if that super 8 shop still exists... I think it was called Top Film. Does anyone know where it is and if it's the type of shop that has regular business hours... And... is it worth going to I guess is the other question. Any help is appreciated...

Brian,
if you finally find it, will you be in a position to take some pictures of it (if the owner agrees, of course) to post here on the Forum? It would be great.

I was there last June and It's definitely still going (got an email list from them about 3 weeks ago). It can take a bit of perseverence to find when you're in the area as the exact location is not clear from a map - if I find a map I marked to show the precise position, I'll let you know. I did take some pictures which I'll try to post if I can find the time. The owner is very friendly and will try and be present and will offer coffee if you email in advance to say when you intend to go. He will also give a discount if you buy at least 2 or 3 items. I'd recommend checking reels for condition, though, as I've sometimes found that the 'quality control' is not quite as thorough as it might be, even though I know that checks are made before films reach the shelves.

Welcome back to the forum, Jeroen. How are you? We all hope you are right.
Do you know this TOP FILM shop Brian, Yanis and Adrian are referring to?

Adrian, glad to know you already have some pictures of this place: I hope you will delight us by posting them.
Ciao.

I almost lived around the corner of this shop.
It actually is at the Marnixstraat 263.
When you look into windows of the shop, there's porno every where.
But when you enter the shop there are all kinds of super-8 films behind the counter (it used to be the other way around: porno behind the counter).
I haven't been there for some years, so I don't know if he still has so many super-8 films.
Here's a link to his catalogue:
http://www.topfilm.nl/index.html
He does know the market value of films, so you won't find a bargain.
Here's an old article about this shop (in German):
http://www.super8site.com/fanzine/aktuell/holland.shtml

Another really nice film shop is Parallax.
Johan has a shop stacked with all kinds of filmcamera's and projectors.
I would certainly recommend to visit his shop (only open on thursday, friday and saturday).
Pieter Langendijkstraat 64, 1054 ZC Amsterdam, the Netherlands Tel: ++31 20 4122082

I live near Amsterdam and will gladly give a tour around town if you like.

I think I was in this shop when I was in Amsterdam in the early 90's. Is it on a corner? I remember a couple film boxes in the window and porn being everywhere! I bought a three reel digest of The Sorcerers with Boris Karloff and was very happy. Sometime ago I saw a picture of a super 8 shop in Amsterdam that looked very different. A huge front with large images of Charlie Chaplin and other silent stars on the front of the building so I was thinking there was another place I hadn't been to. Whatever, it will be fun to go back to the place I had been to before. Anytime I can see super 8 films in a shop is cause for excitement!

Yes, the shop is on a corner (near the fire department).
Don't forget Parallax! This is a great shop!

My offer to give you a tour around Amsterdam is meant for every forum member visiting Amsterdam.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Hans about Parallaxe. I go there each time we visit Amsterdam, and indeed Johan Kalee is a really super guy.

Check out the original Gaumont cinema projector in his window. It was designed and built by one of Johan's ancestors!

Prior to our very first visit to him, he actually posted a street map of Amsterdam to us, with the route marked out on it from our hotel to his shop!!! It's also another excuse for a delightful walk through the Vondelpark.

Cheers

I do live around the corner from Top Film, but never go there. Too expensive and not much on offer, I think, although I picked up some 240m super8 reels for a decent price once.
I agree with Hans, more fun to visit Johan in his shop Parallaxe, be prepared to spend a few hours because he talks a lot :-) And his shop is a true treasure-trove of film goodies, piles and piles of everything crammed in every available floorspace. I never leave empty handed. Only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Yes. A veritable 'Aladdin's cave'. Johan will usually do a deal if you're serious - but even so - all too easy to spend a fortune, though no sales pressure whatsoever......you just keep seeing things you want to buy! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] - and I agree, he can 'talk the hind leg off a donkey'!
