Philips Cavalcade 1966 Derann Films box title: Dollywood Cavalcade
The first thing to say about this very special release from beloved Derann Films is that this is not the 1934 film ‘Dollywood Cavalcade’ which all but everyone seems to get mixed up about. The film within this box in fact is ‘PHILIPS CAVALCADE’ which celebrated 75 years of music as the opening title displays. Glad we got that put right.
PHILIPS CAVALCADE ’75 years of music is a delightful puppetoon style film produced by Joop Geesink Dollywood Netherland company in 1966 with music by Andre Popp and in Technicolor at that. It is said that some of George Pal’s original animators worked on this and looking at the style you could guess that about right. This is a beautifully animated film with something new to spot every time you watch it and a film I never tire of.
After the opening titles we have an old time theatre with some can can girls hard at it entertaining a filling theatre but as the camera pans around we find ourselves in a fairground setting. As the film slowly passes through the years we move onto a waltz setting, a chap kisses the hand of a pretty lady and then we cut to a family portrait on the wall complete with child. That was quick work! Forward in time again to a jazz band belting out a Charleston beat with dancers giving it all they have, followed by no doubt the dawn of sound and Al Jolson in puppetoon form sings a number. A big surprise is to see Betty Boop pop up in this making it even more of a thrill then we are whisked off for afternoon tea, then Hawaii. Eventually we get to the 1960’s and the beat bands which is a funny sequence finishing in a massive concert hall with a pianist. The swooping camera pans over him and up to pillars each of which has musical instruments on or Philips products including a cassette recorder which fascinates me no end finally onto a TV where upon…….. You will have to buy this lovely film to see what happens next!
Some pretty amazing content in this and full of colour and music. Derann once again pulled out the stops making available a rare item on super 8 film available for we collectors. If you don’t already have it look around and you will see it turn up from time to time, but do make sure you get the right film as people do seem to get confused about this and the other 1934 film. But the good news is Derann also released the 1934 film ‘Philips Cavalcade’ which Derann box titled just ‘Cavalcade’ (about 145ft) as well.
Philips Cavalcade 1966 Derann Films box title: Dollywood Cavalcade Print quality A Sound A Really nice film for your collection and about 190ft.
