One of the great sights on the home cinema screen is the roar of the MGM lion heralding another classic film from the greatest studio of all time. A lot of MGM material is available on super 8, but I am sure many people are aware that Leo the lion has had different lion 'actors' over the years. The original Lion was Slats in 1924. He was of course a silent lion, and the mighty roar was not heard until the advent of sound film in 1928. Here are all the lions used by MGM over the years:

They must have been from the same acting family; I think I can see a family resemblance between them, but haven't Lions worn their fur differently over the years?
Slats seems to have let his grow long .

Hi Mike, There was actually one other Lion used in the mid-fities, but he only lasted about a year. Apparently MGM Executives thought he looked too playful, so he lost his job real fast! My personal favourite lion is Jackie, possibly because she preceded most of the MGM films from Hollywood's golden age. The descendants of the original MGM lions now have a home at the MGM Grand Casino in Las vegas.
