Can someone out there tell me the distinct differences between the Elmo ST-1200 HD and Elmo ST-1200 D projectors?

The 'D' is a mono projector with a non standard power cord, while the 'HD' is stereo with a standard power cord. There are other subtle differences but those are the most noteworthy.

I thought the HD was high-definition.

Just kidding -- and welcome to the forum, James.
Actually, the HD can play and record on both the main and balance stripe. You can achieve stereo playback only if each track has the appropriate channel of the stereo recording, and you feed the output of each stripe to separate speakers.
