Hi Michael,
I wouldn't say these were rare as you do see them quite often up for sale,The price is high for them but ebay is always a surprise these days,Mark.

Hi Mark,

I'm not a huge S8 collector so maybe I'm incorrect but, aren't those just Universal-8 repackaging of the Castle cutdowns?

Mike of you meant by repacking was to put those Castle prints inside new boxes, the answer is no.

Based my experience shaows many Abbot & Costello in U8 box have dupey quality compared to Castle prints which are always pin sharp.

Regarding the above auction I should say they are not rare but highly sought by both collector and non. Just if he listed them in individual listings with low starting price I believe he would be able to reach the starting amount he put now.

Mike

They are all 400' digests and sound. Individually he may get $25-@40.00 pounds or less. I would think that the price is right for all 7 but when you convert to USD it's high to me. I think is USD they would sell for $20-30.00 or more. But when you convert the GNP to USA that's more like $40.00-60.00 which is high.

I wasn't suggesting the seller had just put them in new boxes - just that these were later re-releases of the Castles.

Sorry Mike, as a non English speaker, I didn't get the meaning of "just" you used in the post. For me "just" = "only" meaning U8 is only Castle in different box but is the same in terms of print quality.

Michael,

As Pat said these are the 400' editions. These long versions were released only after Castle became U-8. I agree with Winbert...not rare but popular.

In some cases, these U8 releases had previously unreleased material (the Marx Brother titles come to mind, as "Duck Soup" was only released, by Casle Films as "This is War, at 8 minutes, and U8 400ft digest was 18 minutes) ...

However, I couldn't tell you as to what footage mayt or may not be new in each release.

I do agree that in many cases, the U8 prints were not of as high of quality as the castle releases of the same title.

Mike,

This below link is just recently completed auctions for many Universal 8 films (horror genre):

Universal 8: Horror genre

As you can see, even the top 3 films were sold above $110!!.

So the UK link above has also a potential to be sold for the price he/she asked if he listed them individually.

cheers,
