... and it's a Beaulieu!

 -

She's got the paint problem as you can see, but she runs. However the sound is *very* fluttery, Andrew /Bill can you give me any suggestions where to start checking for that? Bear in mind I've not cleaned/greased anything yet, just plugged and tested. Also, I need a new levelling foot as... well see for yourself [Frown] -

I'm going to give her a basic clean, run a few movies then get her up to Bill for a full service, I think the ol' dear would appreciate it!

I had a loose hank Bush on my twin track when it arrived Stuart. I put a thread about the repair carried out to it on one of the forums if you're interested.

These soon become detached on just the twin track models and the design was changed on later models.

Your foot here, needs drilling, tapping and a new screw thread fitting to the foot by the looks of things. I have no idea how it could have broken in manner it has though, so close to the end of the thread???

If you wanted to send me the foot with the broken section also to me by post, I'd be able to repair it for you so it would look and work like new for you if you'd like?

Was it screwed all the way out during transit?
Madness if it was.

Anyhow buddy, nice find and so far as your sound issue, I'd have to see a short video of it in action before I could second guess what you're experiencing.
Can you post one on Vimeo with a link, playing one or two sound films of course?

As for the paint job, try a little "Back to Black" on it for now. It will work wonders in the short term to smarten its appearance until a full strip down and paint job can be given to it, if you decide.

Andrew, as always it's good to hear from you. I'll have some time tomorrow to film the old girl in action to show you how she performs. And yes, the sender sent it with the foot out, what is wrong with people? Thanks for the offer of sorting out the foot, it's much appreciated. And apologies for my ignorance, what's the hank bush?

Cheers old chap!

A hank Bush is a type of fitting for placing a deep tapped hole socket into a slimline piece of sheet steel just like a Beaulieu base.

On mine it was the side adjustment foot that was just rattling around the packaging of the projector as the hank Bush (which was only ever hand riveted from the inside face of the plate by the manufacturer) had worked loose during transit.

It's quite a weak link on these and the manufacturer did well by changing its design by incorporating this tapped hole into the actual main body casting on their later models.

I didn't fit a hank bush second time around, I made a better arrangement which utilizes a slimline nut to secure the tapped boss from the inside of the plate.
Much much stronger and secure now and I doubt this could happen again now even with our courier handling!😂

A watch out from this original design Stuart is, if you are sending it to Mr Parsons anytime by courier, just place extra protection around this entire foot and base area.
On just this model the electronic circuit board inside the lower plate has a cut out around this foot to accept the thread from it travelling up and down inside the machine during adjustments.

If like mine the hank bush works loose there is a possibility the board can get damaged and broken by the colliding thread as the foot works loose.

Just a watch out for you Stuart and I would definitely recommend you do a similar upgrade after reading the thread I posted at that time.

Your knowledge on these machines never ceases to amaze me Andrew. I guess they'd be your Mastermind specialist subject? [Wink] Here's a link to it in action, the flutter (I inadvertently call it wow on the video) is clearly evident. link

We only know whatever we have experienced or had shared with us all Stuart. Plenty know far more on these than I ever will but we all have try to learn little bits and pieces on our machines, nowadays in particular.
We owe it to our film collections and our wallets! [Big Grin]

I will take a look at the video shortly thanks and report back to you anything I can conclude from watching it.
Thanks for posting it Stuart, shared examples of each new problem we find with our machines only adds to our shared learning with these things.

Stuart

Oldtimer Cameras has a Service Manual available, however, a user really needs certain equipment to assist.
https://www.camera-manual.com/model.php?modelid=947

In the manual under WOW & FLUTTER we have:
1) Wires may be in contact with the flywheel
2) Rubber roller is not correctly concentric
3) The mast does not freely slide in the cells-support and does not allow the roller loop tightener support to react
4) The restoring loop lever sticks the film against the head gate. Slightly twist the head gate downward, then check with the film MS8 FLA that the wow flutter level is under 0.28%

The above certainly seems to lost something in its translation!

But I hope that it may help you and Andrew.

Yes Maurice, I'm already in the process of writing a piece explaining to Stuart all I know regarding the Capstan drive mechanism, electro mechanically from the main switch right through the entire mechanism including its purpose and how each section of mechanism links to others in close proximity.
I will explain also a little surrounding the electronic aspect of this mechanism so far as my own learning and knowledge up to this point in time, can take me.
Points raised here by Maurice from the manual will be explained there including photographs, the best that I can.

Hopefully if nothing else it will give owners a basic insight into how this whole mechanism works in conjunction directly with the main motor and claw and should provide a few pointers to troubleshoot when all is not well in this region.

I have only the theoretical learning from all of this as so far neither of my own capstan drive mechanisms have caused a single problem to date.
No doubt one day they will however.

Congratulations Stuart, and what excellent assistance from Andrew & Maurice. I was wondering who this Hank Bush person was!

Anytime you can find a working projector it is like hitting the lotto! Good luck with the restoration.
