I bought mine brand new from a place on Wardour Street in around 1985 and I'm sure it was on an offer at £20.00 back then, so they've always been expensive (but worth it).

I have bought mine on Ebay for 90 Euros.
And I have modified it to use the Tape for 16mm Film going over 4 Frames on the Super 8 Film.

Thomas,
Many of us would be interested to learn more about this
modification! If you had some pictures of this it would be great to see.

Thank much!

Well I have unscrewed the Plate and pressed the two pins under the Tape out. Now I can use Tape with 15mm which goes over the holes where the pins are lost. When dropping the new perfholes into the Tape I must do this three times. On in original Position and then one setting left and setting right the Film for dropping 4 new Holes into the 15mm Tape.

The result is excellent , and a bit better : Checking with a magnifying lens , no tape burrs observed inside sprockets holes .

I would have thought it would be worth more than the £69 he asked.

I have no idea for the price of this in new condition, I didn't get it from Ebay.
Moreover, it was the first time I saw this model for sale, not seen it anywhere before, even on the Web......

To be note this model do not appears in Leo Catozzo's documentation I found. (Document Only shows 35mm, 16mm, 9,5mm pro splicers).

As necessary, many parts seems to be common with others "Leo Catozzo"'s main models :

So, the question could be : Is it possible to convert "easily" a former 16mm Pro splicer to "S8" standard ?

I made also a Test with a 13mm Polyester Crystal Clear Tape and it works (It is necessary to move the spliced film on next holes to repeat the stamping manoeuver)

Thomas Knappstein - Excellent idea! [Big Grin]
Will the plate fall back right in its original position when reassembly? No further adjustments needed? Would like to do the same to my splicer too. [Razz]

Phil Murat - That seems like a custom made ones, but possibly "in house" modification - not aftermarket work.

Is it possible to convert "easily" a former 16mm Pro splicer to "S8" standard ? - Probably, but not that easy IMHO. If I have parts&time&decent machine shop nearby it could be done for sure (which I have none of them [Big Grin] ).

Phil's Super 8 CIR is one of their top of the range 'pro' models - I had one in the more usual silver colour years ago and now have one like his in the gold paint colour. The nice thing about them is they use the retracting 'U Knife' tape cutting blade which is so much better than the other versions with the exposed (and therefore intentionally blunt) tape cutter.

I have a pro CIR 'Quad Rank' splicer here somewhere too - its matrix registers four super 8 films at once and would have been used by super 8 printers prior to slitting the film into four separate parts. I'll dig it out and put up a picture over the weekend.

Interesting: I looked on both the PEC and CIR website, and couldn't find this model. The usual Super 8 model new, appears to be over £300. At least this is what some seller is saying on Ebay.

Here are some pictures of my CIR splicer that was used in labs and studios to join quad-rank 4 x super 8 films before slitting.

Based on their 35mm models but with a redesigned matrix - you can see in one of the pictures the set of multiple perforation hole punches pressed down from the top section.

It can still be used to join a single super 8 film but the tape edges need to be manually cut.

I've also added another picture of my other CIR splicers - Super 8, 16mm and 35mm. The 16mm one started life as a CIR magnetic film splicer - I fitted the required matrix and punches (available quite cheaply then) to convert it into a 16mm film splicer.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the pictures showing a nice CIR splicers "range".

So I can see one which looks like closed to mine in 1st picture,
(upper right side of it).

I assume , as necessary , it is still possible to get spare parts for it.
Anyway these splicers are built "as trucks", "U" knife is sharp as a rasor with thick wall, punching pins and die-plate are perfectly fitted , so, probability to need parts is very low.....

To be note, as shown on my 1St picture, this model was patented under ref 4002522 , the nominal recording date is 1977 by documents available.

Hello Phil

I have the same Super 8 model as yours but possibly from an earlier run as mine only has one US patent number.

 -

I bought a new U Knife years ago and have not needed to use it yet, they should be available along with most CIR parts from PEC.

Hello Chip

PEC are a London based company who have been in business since 1932 supplying the UK film industry with all manner of film supplies and also now digital equipment too.

This is their CIR splicers & spares webpage:

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the link.
I assume spare parts for "S8 Splicers" are only available upon customer request and out of stock.

Hello Phil

I would suggest emailing PEC if you don't see any part you want as they may still be able to help - for any cine related equipment sending an email or a 'phone call is recommended to check on stock levels first before ordering. I have received excellent service from them at all times, particularly from Alan Alger and Ross Wheeler. My most recent orders were for film cans, splicing tape rolls and cleaning supplies as I haven't needed any parts for my CIR splicers for a long time.

U Knife is the description of the top cutter blade that slices the splicing tape, but to be on the safe side Tom I suggest you email / 'phone them first. I did wonder if the lack of 'photos was due to my PC but it seems as though others cannot see their pics too.

Cheers Kevin, i will do that. IF, (only if) these are correct there half the price of wittners who seem to want 40 pounds which is way OTT.

Wittners charging more for identical cine gear than anyone else is no surprise to me - have a look at the other PEC film department web pages too - splicing tapes about half the Ebay re-seller prices:

Blimy, yes i see what you mean, they reply so quickly to an enquiry, and i am now buying a brand new U blade for my 16mm CIR for just £27 instead of Wittners £40 + postage. Thanks for pointing us to this firm. I must admit i never heard of them before but love there website. And the prices.
A new blade will be just in time for me as i am going to do a nice bit of work on one of my features [Wink]

Splicers of Phil e Kevin are de luxe models with few or not data are available, but, as far as I know, they are not amatorially modified, but left the factory as they are (as said).
One thing that testifies to this is the space to insert the tape: a 16mm or 35mm tape would not enter in the gap. I've never seen this model live, not even here in Italy, but Kevin or Phil can confirm this detail.

@Robert and Nantawat: did you managed to reduce the problem of the tape not cut? My splicer after cleaning still does work, but I have to give more force to the cut.

Hello Luigi,
I found it gave a better cut when I used the retaining clips on mine; not sure if all models have these. Still getting some tape which has to be trimmed with scissors, but not every time, and not as bad as before.

I have to try with the retaining clips.
On the Cir / Ferrania I know two types of clips, like splicer on this thread, long clips, and another type, more shorter (and very fragile!), that I have.
