My once beautiful 2-reeler XANADU has completely turned to vinegar.
So I am looking for a „new“ 2-reeler from this title
in good shape and without any vinegar syndrome.
Maybe someone can help me.
The german piccolo-film release would be preferred,
but I would also like to take the Universal-8 version.
Thanks for looking
Regards
Oliver

Oliver ...

I have a question as well as some help. Help first.

Thi is one of thr RARE Universal 8 digests that was reprinted on L.P.P. film stock ... I don't know who the company was, (Red Fox perhaps?), but i have seen screenshots from it and the color is REALLY good, so try to hold out for that one.

2. Question, could you perhaps, (even though it has vinegar), give us a rundown of the "edit" of the digest as, being a picolo release, it might well have a different edit and different footage.

Osi,
here comes the description... It was the last time ever I could watch XANADU because the material is already damaged and had to go directly into the trash can!
What a sad moment...! And WHAT A TERRIBLE SMELL!

Reel 1
It starts with the complete Universal logo (all kind of planes and the UFO)
Short titles with Michael Beck tearing the paper; it flies to the painting of the Girls
The song „I‘m Alive“ (3:15)
Short sequence between Kira and Sonny meeting in the park, the first kiss
Longer scene when Kira appears in his studio talking about him and his dreams and his Drawing
Short scene in front of the (later Xanadu) building when Kira convinces Sonny to make his dream come true
Sonny and Danny arrive at the building, going inside, leading to the almost complete song „Dancin‘“ (6:50)
End of reel 1

Reel 2
Outside the building, Danny and the workers drinking champagne, talk of Danny and Sonny; Kira appears.
They are going to buy clothes.
Song „All over the world“ seems to be complete (3:50)
Kira and Sonny dance slowly in front of the building, then inside...
Danny starts the Xanadu opening night: the rollerblade party with a cool choreography, almost complete (2:50)
The full song XANADU (3:05), followed by parts of „Fool Country“ (Intro, Tap Dance, Rock) (2:00)
Reprise from XANADU (1:10)
Kira disappears...
Sonny is sad, walks through all the other couples over to Danny, until the „other Kira“ offers him a drink
The End

That sounds virtually the same as the U8 release,

I didn't realise super 8 prints suffered with vinegar, i thought it was generally 16mm b/w prints [Frown]

Yes Tom. I had a Derann feature go VS and a friend has another Derann going VS. I guess everything has a life span.

Here are a few sensible tips.

Also had a precious Acetate home movie showing 2 on the A-D strip so popped that in the freezer.

Before I read the tips of Lee
I touched the material and it seemed kind of wet.
The next sign is: it becomes „wavy“ and won’t fit the spool anymore.

I STARTED A NEW THREAD „THE VINEGAR SYNDROME“
AND WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK TO MY ORIGINAL THREAD HERE.
Thank You very much!

White powder/dust around the hub of the reel is an indication too

Tom ... always the lucky one! Beautiful color there, Tom!

To add a little bigger level of intrigue ...

There was actually super 8 optical sound full feature of XNADU! No kidding. I know that at least one copy exists but honeatly, I have forgotten who the lucky collector ... is!
