A friend recently ran some old 16mm tv shows and couple of them, although when they arrived after she bought them were wound tightly and looked perfectly fine on reel, and even played & sounded really great, the film returning on the take up reel was very loose... so much so we were relieved we had used a larger size take up reel than the 25min tv show was on... looked like it may have even been turning left & right as went on to take up reel, and one of the films ended up sort of egg shaped on the take up reel. When we rewound back to original reel we kept stopping film to pull up slack and tighten it up so that both films wound up very nicely looking again. But now we are looking for a cure or fix and read a little on line about folks using camphor for some film problems. We found that we have a little Indian grocery store in our area and that is where we read we could find camphor reasonably for sale, but before buying wanted to know if anyone has tried adding it to a can of film that has loose take up? Both films are on plastic reels and came in plastic Viacom cans. Thanks anyone for info!

Welcome Tracy...I used a combination of camphor and mineral oil on a small 8mm reel. The film was twisted and brittle. I put the film onto a metal reel added the camphor and mineral oil mixer into a metal film container and put the film reel into the container. I left it in there for about 2 months...turning it weekly. Although not perfect...I am now able to run the film through the projector.

Ive read where others have had similar results...however they have had to leave the film in the container for several months...even years. You might also try Film Renew.

One way to get a warped film to go onto a spool is to twist the film over when lacing, and rewinding.
