Hi Mark,
I just did it today, and would like to re-confirm you that sending money is not free no matter you mark it as "gift".
It will be free if that within the country (UK to UK). But if it is already cross the border, then, there will be a cross-border payment fee which is between 0.5% - 1%.
You can see that here (from Paypal UK):
https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/UserAgreement/ua/EUUA-outside#fees- policy
(ps: China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan is 0%)
- This fee is different from one country to another. - This fee is charged to either sender of recipient but not both (we can select the option) - This fee applies for those using Paypal balance or Bank Transfer and is more higher/expensive if we fund the money from Credit Card - Finally, this applies only for "Personal Payment" while for "Purchase" is free because the fee will be automatically burdened by the other side (recipient)
So bear that in your mind .
cheers,
