Graham,
Caveat: this model is out of production; we got ours on EBay.
We have the Hewlett-Packard Photosmart S-20 scanner, which was marketed at the time when they put out the Photosmart system (HP camera, scanner, printer) and it is quite good.
It is built like a little box, with a frontal motorized feed for 35mm negs and slides, and it will also ingest up to 5-by-7 inch prints. The highest resolution comes with negatives and slides.
The thing is, make SURE you get the S-20 model if you go looking for it (it has the model no. on the lid.) They made an older model which looks exactly the same, but the S-20 is USB-enabled and is the only one that will work with later operating systems, such as XP.
I know there are more advanced models, like the Nikon Coolscans, but they also cost quite a bit more unless you get very lucky.
The only drawback is that the HP software can be a bit neurotic when installing, but ours got going, so just to mention it....
