In the book "The Dream That Kicks", the prehistory and early years of cinema in Britain, it says that the famous diarist, Samuel Pepys, bought a magic lantern in London in 1666.
In 1663, a London optician named John Reeves started making lanterns for sale. Pepys wrote:- "....comes by agreement Mr Reeves, bringing me a lanthorn, with pictures on glass, to make strange things appear on a wall, very pretty".
He could have written that for this Forum.
