just dabbling back a bit into 8mm and 16mm - in a very limited way due to work , etc. But looking for a nice relaible 8mm projector and a 16mm preferably a bell and Howell with a new worm fitted. Anyone know about these "amazing" projectors by this company on e-bay called "Retro=vision" - I love theover the top "Ronco" style info-commercial written descriptions s! But, are these projectors any good - very expensive and I am prepared to pay the price if they are as good as they/he says. Could do with some feed back. Thanks. Mark

Hi Mark I`m down to one 16mm Eiki and one dual silent machine at the moment. But sure there will be something on here.
Or Contact Noel Pratt for a very good value B+H later model with a new gear. Very nice man too.

I've no experience with Retrovision but if the seller doesn't claim to have replaced the worm then it will still be the original. £200 is top whack for an ordinary TQ3 with a new worm. There's no substitute for a demonstration of a Bell & Howell by the seller before parting with your cash. Probably 9 out 10 16mm Bell & Howells on Ebay need a new worm gear. They're either seized solid or run very rough. Quite a few enthusiasts have replaced the worm gear but it's time consuming and if you get it wrong then the projector is useless, hence the demonstration. Price is no guarantee either as some machines are new looking and overvalued while I've bought an old 642 with an original uncracked worm for £36 that runs well - though I'll probably need the worm changed one day.

I advise not buying from eBay, particularly if you want a Bell & Howell. As Paul says, most will need a new worm gear which will cost more than you pay for the projector. Be aware of comments like "runs well" and certain "over the top" descriptions.
I suggest you stick to well-known dealers who may have their reputation to think of.
I would suggest you steer clear on any of the very old Bell & Howells up to the TQ3 series (which are turquoise in colour). As these will not be very reliable along with capacitors that will require changing as these tend to dry out over a period of time especially on old equipment.
From past experience the later (black in colour) US or Japanese TQ3 specialist are the ones to go for which i sell.
You will note that they changed specification on the very brittle plastic they used on the worm gear on very late ones. This has also been very heavily documented.
I have recently been involved in a installation set up in the Auckney islands. For a museum for an old WW2 RAF cinema. I supplied them with one of these projectors for reliability along with the film that was shown at the time Mutiny on the Bounty from 1935.

You will find that Paul Foster has a great number of Super 8 and 16mm films for sale on his web-site. A varied list of titles which could easily start a personal collection.
