Donald Duck first appeared in a cartoon 12 September 1936 "Donald And Pluto".
However, the opening title says "Walt Disney presents a Mickey Mouse" although Mickey is not in the film.
Presumably at that time filmgoers had not heard of Donald.

What about The Little Wise Hen (1934) and The Band Concert (1935)?

Indeed,
Sorry.
I was wrong.
Perhaps what I read meant that Donald was not a supporting actor in this film.

Hello Maurice

I think you are right it may well be the first to have Donald mentioned as the leading player in the title - Mickey Mouse was the Disney superstar for sure, almost a brand of his own even then, hence the 'A Mickey Mouse' pre-title would help promotion wise

These are amongst my favourite ever animated cartoons with such beautiful artistry and skill going into each hand drawn frame.

I have a lovely 16mm copy of this film in Technicolor. A laugh a second with the magnet. [Big Grin]
