Hearing that "Remove Debris" has been successfully launched from the Florida Kennedy Space Centre took me to thoughts of Dastardly and Muttley.
The description that it will carry a net for captivating space litter and a harpoon that can spear and haul in larger objects could be some of Klunk's latest contraptions.

This is actually a pretty big deal. What's up there keeps colliding among itself and fragmenting and dispersing.

There's a thought that if they don't do something low Earth orbit may eventually be a cloud of fast moving shrapnel and it will be impossible to launch anything for decades while it all falls into the atmosphere and burns up.

no weather satellites
no communication satellites
no exploratory missions either manned or not
no space stations

-back to the world as it was before Sputnik!

Cell phones would still work, at least locally, because they are based on networks of towers. Long distance could get dicey for any phone.

Forget about GPS, though. I can imagine a bunch of sailors standing on deck trying to remember how their Dads navigated. The young ones studied it at the Merchant Marine Academy, but they forgot it years ago.

Then again there are the airlines...

I used to work for a company that built equipment for undersea fiber optic cables. That would be the business to be in: there aren't enough lines between the continents without satellite transmission.

-and if you are some little island 300 miles from anywhere else with 500 people, you'd probably be wise to start breeding carrier pigeons! You aren't getting a cable any time soon.

You do all realise that all those satellites are the main cause of global warming.

Think about the way they work. Low powered microwave radiation.

In your kitchen. your own microwave sits and has that same setting, but they call it defrost.

I love the smell of film in the morning.

Sounds more like a project for Wallace and Grommit! That would make a great episode.
