OK, I firmly prove my "ole fart' category here, but i tell, it's amazing as to just how much good music there was in the 70's, especially the late 70's.
Take Nick Lowe and Iam Gomm, (who both co-wrote "Cruel to Be kind'), for instance. "Cruel To be kind", which is still as good as the very day it first hit the airwaves, (i first heard it on a little portable AM transistor radio) only reached up to #12 on the top 40, and yet, it's still so damned good.
Iam Gomm, who had a "hit" with Hold On, only reached #18, and yet, it is such a repeatable song! here it is ...

and, of course, Cruel to Be kind ...

I still listen to "top 40" radio, but I rarely hear a song that i would want to hear even one time through, and yet, they're number 1?!! The music today just doesn't seem to have any real "staying power". granted, that is just my opinion, but I think it's fairly valid.
