Hi Stuart,
I have a Eumig S938 and have had no problems with blown lamps. The pin or socket corrosion may be the problem. Lamp pin or projector socket corosion would increase the resistance in the lamp circuit and would lower the current in the lamp. This should INCREASE lamp life. But if you have lamp pin or projector socket corrosion, the contact between the socket and the lamp can be so poor that the lamp will not light up at the 3 volt warm up setting which is applied when you first turn on the projector. But it may still light up when you put the projector into the forward-with-lamp position. This 3 volt warm up is essential to preserving lamp life, without it the lamp sees the full shock of 12 volts applied in a cold condition, and this will blow lamps really fast. So the first thing to do is to make sure the lamp glows when you just turn on the projector. If it does'nt you have poor contact, in which case sand the lamp pins with emery cloth and wipe the contacts with a very slight amount of vaseline to help prevent corrosion. Probably though you will have to replace the lamp socket. I have found you can get halogen lamp sockets at Home Depot, or if you can't find one you may have to buy a cheap halogen track light and strip out the socket. These halogen lamp sockets all corrode, and have to be replaced every few years.
Finally, to extend lamp life, you need to set the transformer to a higher voltage setting NOT a lower voltage setting, say 240 or 240 volts in the UK, instead of 230v.
