Hi out there!

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a few adeas to help sort out my Elmo GS1200. I will explain the problem, best I can.

I have a crackling noise coming through the speakers (sounds like interference). The noise comes and goes, gets louder and quiter (even when both volume knobs are turned to zero). The noise is louder if I turn to optical.

In addition to this, I am worried about my rear arm motor. During normal film playback, the motor is very powerful and I am worried this will damage my films. When in rewind (with the film passing through the projector and the front reel acting as a take up reel), you can stop the spindle with your little finger very easily. If you try the same with the back spindle (when playing forward), there is such force that you just cant stop it spinning. It is acting with the force that the front reel would use when using the yellow rewind switch. Also when in 'Forward' mode, you can hear one of the motors speed up and slow down.
A friend told me to try cleaning the switches etc, heads and all to cure the noise, but it has not made any difference.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Another thing to note is that I got this projector from Germany, and I know not to put the lamp on full as it will shorten its life, but I wondered if the extra voltage could be doing this to the projector.

Thanks [Confused] [Frown] [Confused]

Hi Colin I think there is some trick relating to flicking the record on and off with the sound interference thing, its a regular thing on GS`s Kevin,F, will probably know best.
There should be an adjustement in the back of the projector for the take up strength, not quite sure if its the same in the GS with the extra motor but on the other elmo`s there the belt drives the clucth at the bottom of the arm there is an adjustable tension thing on the clutch itself.
I know the volatge is 220 in germany but there should also be a fairly easy way of putting it to 240, on a 16mm elmo I got from germany it was fixed 200 but just moving one wire put it to 240, just moving one wire and clip.( or turning a dial) it should be possible. kevs, your man really,
best Mark.

Hello Colin

I think I had a similar problem with my GS and Kev' solved it for me [Smile] I used to get a kind of electric static noise with a bit of thumping thrown in for good measure through the speakers and it was always there regardless of the position of the volume controls.

Mark is quite right, Kevs' cure was to push the spot recording button over to record and then push the red recording switches on the front up and down a couple of times. It cured the problem on mine, apparently these switches are self cleaning but only when they are used! I operate mine a couple of times every so often now.

Hope that's useful, but as Mark says 'Kevs' your man'! [Wink]

Mike.

Well thanks Guys, much appreciated. I wondered why my friends at work used to call me "Mr Elmo from Grouchland"!!!

Colin I think you have a number of probs but the first thing is that Mike and Mark are both correct. Hold in the spot recording button at the back and then operate the recording tabs repeatedly a dozen times or so and that should stop the crackling noises which BTW can be extremey loud when they get going. The record/play switches are self cleaning and as most people use their machine for playback only, they tend to tarnish and give rise to this problem.
Depending on the version of GS there will be a circuit board mounted on the side of the rewind motor. Ver 1 does not have this board but vers 2 & 3 do. If you have this board with 3 potentiometers on it then it probably needs adjusting. The top pot is for the take up tension, the middle is for rewind tension in reverse play with large spools and the bottom pot is for rewind tension for small spools.
If you dont have the the small circuit board then it could possibly be down to the higher voltage produced because its set to 220V instead of 240V on the transformer.
Now onto to that issue: There are three terminals on the mains transformer marked P1, P2 & P3. P1 is 220V, P2 is 230V and P3 is 240V. Your machine probably has a wire soldered to P1 for 220V. I would suggest that you unsolder the wire and solder it to the P3 position instead. With the version 1 machine the spool motors have no control and are supplied by a volage direct from the transformer so the mains voltage setting has to be correct for proper operation. Very often the reverse takeup motor has less torque than the takeup. With the ver 2 & 3 machines the torque is set by the small control board as explained above.
Failing all this then give me a phone call and I will have a chat with you.
I will eamil you my phone number as I have moved since we last chatted.

Hope the above helps you and others, Kevin.

Thanks Kev. I will check these things out tomorrow and let you know. I feel a bit more cheerful now anyway, I have wanted a GS for some time and I had only used it for 3 hours before this noise started. I thought I had got a dud.
Thanks again, very much appreciated
