I know someone who bought a second hand print of this title with an excellent stereo track. I don't know who re-recorded it but I wondered if anyone here has done so with good results. If it's not too formidable a task, I'll see if I can get a suitably equipped person to do this for me.

Glad that you brought this up, Adrian. I just acquired a very inexpensive super 8 print of MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (one of those ebay risks that actually paid off). The picture is great, but the sound is kind of low. With the DVD release of this film finally coming in November (in the wake of KING KONG), I'm hoping that I can find someone with the equipment to rerecord it for me. Any takers? SGB

Adrian,

A few years back I re-recorded the soundtrack of my print of "Terminator 2" with terrific results. The only difficulty I had was with two scenes. One is where Linda Hamilton stabs her doctor, and the other is Linda escaping from her cell. The film print is slightly different than the DVD version. I don't recall the exact problem, but I remember those scenes slowing the process down.

Adrian'

A few years back Keith Wilton did a print of "Terminator 2" for me with excellent results, why not ask him at the BFCC next Saturday, it should be the right time for him now the latest convention is out of the way.

Adrian- you might be surprised how easy it is to re-dub a print yourself. Especially full length features. I don't use any type of sync unit. I just hook the jack cables to the DVD "out", and the "AUX IN" on the projector. If the actual magnetic track on the film is of good quality, the results will be great!

Thanks, everyone, for the responses on this.
Nick - to be honest, I certainly WOULD be surprised if I found it easy! Although I'll have a go sometime (probably starting with a short that only consists of one song), I suspect that you have above-average skills, when it comes to your feature recording technique!

James I am interested in what you said, but how do you go about starting the DVD and projector at the same time so they are in sync.I just don't see how or maybe I am dumb. Thanks

Good question Bob.

I'll give you an example of what I do-

Say, for instance, that I wanted to re-record the Matrix excerp of "Playground Skirmish". I would start the super 8 clip, identify exactly what the first frame of picture is, then rewind the film a few frames so that the film is stopped just a couple of frames before the opening scene. Then, I would run the DVD to the same point of the movie. When I have identified the exact same frame that the film starts at, I would back the DVD up to about 10 or 15 seconds before the start of the scene. (Note- I usually run the DVD up to that scene a few times to really be able to memorize the exact point where the targeted scene comes in).

Once I am comfortable with knowing the exact point of the DVD, I will once more back the DVD up about 10 seconds. Then, I will let the DVD play from that point, at which time my hand is on the projector controls, and right when it reaches the targeted scene, I start the projector in record mode.

It usually takes me about 2 or 3 attempts to get it just right, but you will know if its on track after about 5 or 10 seconds into the recording.

I always set up a small screen (white paper or box) right next to the video moniter, so that I can watch to make sure everything is perfectly on track.

Believe me guys, practice makes perfect [Wink] Try doing an old 400 foot digest some time, that will sharpen your skills for sure!

Nick.

Do this with a crystal sync unit and you will be able to sync it first time [Smile] But then we are lucky here in the UK with the 25FPS system and Pedros sync box.

James, which projector do you use for your re-recordings? I'd love to pick up a stereo-capable machine... still kicking myself for letting a Sankyo Stereo-800 go on eBay which sold for less than $70. But that's life, and I'll get lucky yet...! [Smile]

The region 2 DVD of T2 is some buggered up directors cut so syncing that to the film is not possible. It may have been released in theatrical version on video but for the best soundtrack source you'll need the PAL laserdisc.
