What a classic company! EvT offers striping for 8 mm and other gauges of film, here in the UK. At 5.5p per foot, it's not too badly priced at all. Speedy service too. We should be thanful that such services exist!

Hello Simon

I have used EVT and I agree we are fortunate to have such a company in the UK.

I shoot sounds [on a very amateur basis] using an Elmo 110R camera coupled up to the Elmo SR-1 tape recorder, this records a pulse along side the sound track that is later used to synchronise the sound and the film on play back through the GS 1200. I have used EVT to stripe up films shot in this way so that I can then lay the sound track down on the film.

As you say, they provide a great service, very fast and at a good price.

Mike; this sounds interesting. Do you mean you can shoot totally syncronised sound, say of a person talking? How do you match it up later, using the GS1200. Finally, where did you get the equipment from? I need to learn about this!

Would you like to buy a Braun/Nizo and synch cable? [Wink]

I have two films on their way there right now. It's my first attempt at adding a sound track to my own films.

I looked into a number of different sources and everybody has good things to say about Evt. As a bonus, the price is good enough that even adding in international shipping both ways it still doesn't sting!

What does it do? Will I be able to record sound via a separate tape unit? Does it come with tape unit? How much?

To answer your question, it is perfectly possible tp shoot perfect lip synch movies using a double system set up. In the seventies and early eighties several manufacturers produced their own systems, even with the advent of the sound cartridge double system remained popular with amateur film makers as it was closer to the proffessional system still used today.

My set-up is Elmo and you can sometimes find the various bits and pieces you need on the German Ebay site, very few were sold in the UK but the system was very popular in Germany, you will need one of the three cameras made for this sytem, they each had an 'R' suffix in there model number, you will also need either the SR-1 or DR-1 [later model] tape recorder plus either a GS 1200 or GP series projector.

The most tricky bit to source seems to be the cable that connects the camera and the tape recorder, I know that both Kevin and Doug Meltzer were looking for one a while ago.

Having said all that, I'm sure Tonys' camera would be a very good buy so you might want to go down the Braun route.

Simon,

It was a tongue in cheek comment really but I am toying with the idea of selling my Nizo 801 which has the right cable (thanks kev [Wink] )to enable connection to anything that records sound. I was planning to use a minidisk recorder I own. Trouble is, as much as I love the camera, I don't have the same enthusiasm for shooting super 8 as I do watching the stuff. Seems a shame to leave it lying idle.

Might give it a quick try though!

Hmmmm...

What is it about this cable that would make it hard to copy? If you could find the connectors and buzz out the interwiring with an Ohmeter, you should be able to fake it.

What kind of connectors does it have?

If you know of a source for these leads or just the connectors I knoe several people that would be pleased to know about it [Smile]

Hi Mike,

Don't know this connector, but I can ask around.

Do you see any text molded into your connector?

BTW, is it the same connector on either end?

Back on Topic: My first two films are now done at EVT and are on their way back here. I'd estimate their turnaround time there at maybe two days.

Hey Steve,

Well, I've been lurking a few weeks since registering and this topic has grabbed my attention enough to get me to finally post. I'm interested in the EvT Magnetics service, and I was just wondering if they can stripe over tape splices, or how it works for longer (edited) films. Or would you have to just stripe the smaller reels, and then edit? But that begs the question of editing mag striped film in general I guess...

Welcome Joe!

I believe they could stripe tape edited film, but would probably prefer the tape not cover the area where the stripe needs to be. The most preferred method of splicing is to do beveled cement splices since they are very strong and flat.

Here's their E-mail, why not ask?

magevt@amserve.com

Don't be concerned if it takes a few days to hear back, they always answer.

The preferred scheme of things is to be absolutely finished editing your films and then get the striping done, that way the stripe is continuous and you run less of a risk of pops and dropouts

Steve, that connector is the difficult part to get your hands on. I have been looking for a lead now for several months or just the connectors to make a lead myself. I cant track down either. The lead would be easy to make up as they are just wired straight through, 1-1 2-2 etc.
I anyone finds a source then PLEASE let us know.

Kev.
