Simple question: did Walt Disney's TRON (1982) ever come out on super-8?

As far as I know only a 400ft digest.

Drat. This would've made a killer feature release. Ahwell. [Smile]

So what about 7 FACES OF DR. LAO? [Smile]

There is the possibility that it might have come out on optical sound super 8, as an airline feature. I know for a fact that "Never Cry Wolf" and "Splash" were Disney Optical sound releases, (In feature format, mind you, not digest.) So, it is a possibility, as it came from that same time period.

I've never seen the super 8 digest of that either! It must be extremely rare!

If there was a digest, and I've never seen one offered, I'm sure it wasn't a Disney release! However, I have two different trailers on S8, one was a Jeff release, the other from Derann.

Jan,

in autumn 1982, Piccolo Film in Munich/Germany negotiated with Disney about a Super 8 release of "Tron". But as super 8 sales had hit rock bottom at this point of time and everybody was very unsure about the future of 8mm, there was a survey by the German magazine "Kinothek/Videoplay" to find out if collectors were willing to invest in a one-, two- or three-parter. The result seems to have been daunting: It seems the film was never released by Piccolo, and since then Piccolo has never shown any interest in releasing new super 8 films again.

That's really too bad... interesting to know also, as I hadn't been aware of this bit of Piccolo film history before.
Yet it seems Derann had no trouble releasing a full-length print of SECRET OF NIMH (which, as I recall, also first came out in 1982)! Seeing as that Derann has enjoyed good relations with Disney, one would think that TRON had made it to the super-8 format as well - and in full length, rather than a 3x400' digest. Ahwell, but beggars can't be choosers, and there are plenty of other super-8 treasures to be had. [Smile]

That's right, "Secret of NImh" along with "All Dog's go to Heaven" are Don Bluth productions. Don Bluth left Disney shortly after directing "The Small One" for Disney studios, (offered by Derann, by the way) , and started releasing his own product, which includes "Anastasia" and "Titan AE"

Eberhard

... that´s not the full story of new Piccolo releases ...

1) ... end of the 80´s there were a small collector scene which made a small collector magazine in Germany. They asked Piccolo Film - which still exists - if they would release new 8mm films. Piccolo Films answered that they would do, if someone is willing to buy 1000 prints........ under 1000 prints it would be not econmical .....

2) ... they printed 8mm till the middle of the 80s ....

DOH!!! Sorry, guys - of course I know that SECRET OF NIMH is not a Disney production - Disney themselves turned the idea for the film down, saying it was "too dark" which was when Don Bluth split and produced the movie on his own.
I simply goofed up there, that's all. [Eek!]

Andreas,

That's interesting information about Piccolo, especially considering the Derann and Classic consider vastly less than 1,000 prints to viable today - although I suppose it would be a different matter if they had to gain all their income from new 8mm releases.

I wondered what Piccolo do nowadays - produce videos/DVDs? If they still have their 8mm negatives, I expect, in theory, Derann or Classic could produce an English soundtrack and put out some good releases entirely new to the UK and USA.

The theatrical trailer for TRON was released by L A Films in the early 80's. Great trailer, and no fading now. If you see this one on E-bay, grab it!

Adrian,

yes, Piccolo Film is involved in DVD releases. click here and see end of the text.

Piccolo Film is one of two parent companies of EUROVIDEO. The second one is Bavaria Film......
The most 8mm prints from Piccolo Film were made at BAVARIA KOPIERWERK a subsidiary of BAVARIA FILM.

The "Geschaeftsführer" (1st Manager) of EUROVIDEO is Claus Czaika. A manager name which I found also on old Piccolo Film invoices from 1982.

Could be possible that 16mm negatives still exists. Marketing-Film has thrown their negatives away when they closed in the middle of 90s. (The marketing-film of today is only the brand which was bought from another company.)

Andreas,

very interesting to hear about the late Piccolo Film. Do you know which 8mm titles were printed till the mid-80s? As Piccolo were offering many of their films for 20 per cent of the original price at this point of time, I have always thought that they were just selling off their left-over 8mm film stock.

Hi Eberhard,

nice to meet you here.

"Match of the Century" (Das sensationellste Fussballspiel) and some Disney shorts and digest were printed till the middle of the 80s. The prints on the green reels are also later prints. For example "Eyes of Laura Mars Pt. 1" was 24,50 DM, "Eyes of Laura Mars Pt.2 (green reel)" was 79,- DM. That was in 1985 - 87.

20% off? Some 400 reeler were sold for peanuts:
For example "It came from outer space - 3D - with french sound" for 10 DM only. Normal price for 400 color sound reelers was 149,- DM (Disney 189,- DM!!!).

They must have changed the lab when Bavaria stopped 8mm printing. Later titles for example "Das Boot", were made by Hadeko, who delivered before only UFA. Hadeko and Bavaria prints have diffrent leaders. Hadeko was also the lab for the Kempski prints.
