Hi Everyone! I am new to the forum as of today. I went to an antique store looking for a sx-70 polaroid camera and came home with a Hanimex Loadmatic Compact CPM 53. It takes Super 8 film cartridges.

I have tried to find out information on this particular brand of camera but it's proven difficult since it doesn't seem like a popular brand to use now. This will be my first time using a Super 8 camera. I see Kodak still makes some film but I'm not sure if it's the cartridges mine needs -- and I'm not sure if they are even cartridges. I don't fully understand what the "negative" film they have there is either.

Any help would be great!! Thanks so much!

Hello Rene,

Welcome to the Forum.

The Hanimex probably takes the
standard square box style film
cartridge that usually has the
dimensions of roughly 3"x3"x1".
If inside the film camera space
with the door opened, you can determine
if this is the film cartridge needed
and is the standard that KODAK and the
industry established
some years ago.

With that in mind the Kodak 64T is the
cartridge that probably fits properly.

It had been mentioned earlier on the
Forum where 64T can purchase this format
but I do not remember at the moment.

Other than that, it would take the Fuji film
Single 8 Cartridge which is rectangular in shape.

I may be mistaken but believe that Hamimex
was a company that branded their equipment
to other established patented movie cameras and projectors.

Before purchasing the film, you may wish to
check if the camera is functional.

Keep searching the Forum and this post for future updates.

Hi,

as the Hanimex is a Super8-camera, it'll take Super8-cartridges, e.g. the ones sold by Kodak.

"Negative film" is just ...well... a "negative film" as seen in the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_film
As you can see it'll contain a negative image, so you'll have to make a print (on print film) to see the image in the original colours. Of course you'll have to pay for this print, too.
So if you only need a single "version" of your film, you'll choose a "reversal" filmstock. In this case the film will return with the "normal image" from processing and is ready for projection. On the other hand making another copy of a film shot on reversal filmstock is up to impossible*, while making copies from a negative stock can be done rather cheap at a good quality at Andec.

Jörg

* = (okay, it's still possible, but don't ask for the price!)

Hanimex are an Australian company and were one of the largest producers of cameras, projectors and Super 8 gear.

They had plants all over the world manufacturing for them. They have been taken over by Fuji and I understand the brand is no longer used.

There are thousands of Hanimex Super 8 cameras, projectors, editors etc still out there. As far as I know they were sold in Australia, UK and Europe, Asia and Nth America.

They had a reputation for being low cost, but tough and reliable.
