I believe, this is similar to AMERICOM series, i.e super 8mm(or Std 8mm) accompanied by vinyl for sound.

Not really worth that price (unless that Japanese character makes something different, because all Japanese toys related tend to high)

cheers,

It's just a very old toy 8mm projector that came with a recoed to play when you showed the movie for sound. Very rare toy but not worth that kind of money. Sometimes put on ebay with a high price to see if it sells.

I assume the film is in some kind of cartridge that goes on the side. It looks like there's an extra one in the box, on the left. I'm curious about the design, and if there were many of those carts available. I'm not interested in buying it, of course.

I actually saw one of these at a toy fair some years back and was not at all impressed. It's very cheaply made and the projector is just that - a toy. It was very similar to the Kenner toy movie viewers that were manufactured back in the late 60s/early 70s. Maybe it would be worth a couple of hundred to a serious collector, but certainly not worth $1,000.
