I must ask again, (i know this will probably bore some of you as its been asked so many times), Since January im on a mission to check and clean every film we have, and there are over 300 in all,so its going to take some time, i am using film gaurd, (big tall poly bottle). I fully understand the consequences of using too much of this product, & i have always used either 222 or Deranns film cleaner.
here is what i do, small clean cotton hankerchief wrapped tight around my hand so i have a good grip between thumb and finger. i take the bottle and spray only a tiny tiny amount onto the thumb part of the cloth and one tiny amount onto the finger, i gently rub the two together and allow a few seconds for it soak into the cloth to take away any excess, we are talking one single quick squirt of the trigger, Using elmo rewind arms i start after the acadamy leader (this way threading isnt to slippery) and winde the film through not topping up until around 300-400feet. once i get to the end i rewind the film back thru a clean dry part of the cotton (not pressing hard) in order to take away any excess fluid, being a little firmer with my grip toward the start of the reel which takes a lot more of the cleaner.I cannot really use any less because if i did, (in my opinion) i wouldnt be putting enough on.
My problem is this, i have probably cleaned and viewed around 117 movies of various lengths along with a lot of trailers, & despite being extra careful by using as little amount as possible and viewing ASAP after cleaning, usually straight away or the day after, i am now finding i have a bit of a problem with start up speed, a lot of awful warble, as though the flywheel cant pick up speed due to slipping it can take 5-10-15 seconds or more of projecting before the sound steadys and even then there is warble on some films. I have always cleaned the film path after every show and especially now with all the cleaning i also clean all the rollers and capstand with the neccessary cleaners and must say that in over 30 years of projecting and cleaning films i have never had this problem. I am hoping to get a good proffesional MOT on the machine by a top chap, (BP)but im thinking, should i stop using this product and switch top either film renew(if i can get it) or Deranns cleaner which some people say is dry but it did the trick tonight without any problems on 200 footer i showed and i didnt have the start up proble for more than a couple of seconds?

Now then, without any fisty cuffs, what are your opinions on this please? I really dont want to get a once in a life time service only to have this problem again afterwards, should i continue with this product or am i doing someting wrong?

Tom,

Thems fightin' words! [Big Grin] Just kidding of course. [Roll Eyes]

I have been using the same approach with Filmguard, but I apply more than one spray. Th cloth I use is white cotton tee shirt material. I've never had an over saturation problem either. After about five years of using Filmguard, no warbling problem has occurred(except maybe me) in any of my projectors. These include: 16mm B&H 1500 series, Elmo ST-1200s, GS 1200s, ST-800s, Eumigs and a Fujca STD 8,. Have you done a comparison with treated and non-treated films?

I use Filmguard in the same way you have EXCEPT for running back through a dry cloth to remove excess. There shouldn't be any excess if you apply it sparingly. It evaporates eventually, causing no harm to the print in the meantime.

I've never experienced the problems you mention.
I do however gargle daily with Filmguard - Dan has heard the catastrophic results!!!!! [Big Grin]

Seriously, I doubt that the Filmguard is to blame. However, you may yet regret using Derann's cleaner on acetate film.

When I used filmguard I used to pour it on tshirt material and run it through on rewind. Never had a problem. Well, I did get a buzz once [Eek!]

hi Tom, I too haven't had this problem no matter how much or how little FilmGuard I use. What projector(s) are you referring to?

Here is a review that Doug Meltzer wrote - has great pictures

http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=005242#000000

Doug really did a fantastic job on the review.

FilmGuard isnt cheap, and its easy to over-saturate your print when applying by hand. Using Film-O-Clean is the best way to apply FilmGuard to Super8 and 16mm prints - and probably the best way available to clean your films ( while you watch them no less ! )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaU1_vRQKSQ - that shows Film-O-Clean in action on a 16mm projector ( its actually the first model, the Film-O-Clean Mark II is sexier ! )

Wittner-Cinetec just purchased the last of my inventory ( in fact Im boxing their shipment as we speak ), although after I receive more gears from my supplier I will have more units available for sale immediately.

Here is a link to Wittner-Cinetec catalog listing http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/katalog/03_verbr/g_filmoclean.php ( they also have a listing for our 'new' Super8 Film Adaptors which are far superior to Neumade's product )
