Yes it was exactly 50 years ago tonight that I sat in a bar in Williamsport Pa. and watched the American debut of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. Ed was obviously ecstatic to have the opportunity to showcase the mop haired group and with great dramatic flair announced " Ladies and Gentlemen -THE BEATLES!"
This was followed by pandemonium in the Ed Sullivan theater as hords of girls jumped up screaming their heads off, and the young guys in the audience just sat there looking totally bewildered at what was going on.
This event was of course recorded and subsequently released on super 8 by Red Fox films in the USA.
I shall be watching my print tonight.

Paul, what was your first impression of them as you watched them on the TV some 50 years ago? My first exposure to them was Octopus's Garden from Abbey Road in the early 70's as a child. My cousin was a big fan and figured this song would get my imagination going and it did get me interested! I love the Beatles.

Hi Bill,
Well I beat the Beatles to the USA by 3 months, so I had watched them come to fame in the UK on such shows as the David Frost 'That Was The Week That Was'. So I knew exactly what to expect. But I can tell you that the people in that Williamsport restaurant/bar were pretty well dumfounded, they had obviously never seen anything like it before.
I still like the early Beatles, but I think later on John Lennon and his wife were a bad influence in the USA, promoting a drug culture, and exhibiting all kinds of bizarre behaviour. So I like to remember them all as the clean cut group of 1964.

I got into the spirit tonight:

Reel#1: "Sounds of the City" Look at Life visits the music scene in Liverpool in the Early 1960s. Very interesting that other than some stills at the start the Beatles aren't shown at all and never mentioned by name.

Reel#2: "The Beatles Come To Town". The Beatles sing "She Loves You" and "Twist and Shout" in front of a live crowd in Manchester.

My wife isn't home and the windows are closed until June: I cranked the volume!

What I love is in "Sound of a City" the narrator comments that the kids "Dress as they like". Wow! -all the boys have on jackets and ties and all the girls are wearing dresses.

The average law office is more casual these days...

You know what? Those mop heads from Liverpool may just catch on.
