I am new to this forum. I have begun collecting super 8 silent movies from Ebay. I had never tried out my old projector, that my friend had given me. I love old silent movies. Halfway through the first movie which was You're Darn Tootin with Laurel and Hardy I got a loud clicking noise and the picture started bouncing up and down. I pushed up on the lower plastic guard and the chattering stopped for a while then started up again. I seem to remember this happening to projectors at school 45 years ago. Any ideas on how to fix it so I can start watching my movies again? Any help would be appreciated.

HI Norm
Welcome to the forum. My guess would be the loop restorer is what you are pushing? The cover should come off that is over the film path. Remove it and check for any broken piece of film. Also, check to see that the entire film path is clear. I'm sure the other guys in the forum will have suggections for you.

Thank you very much for your suggestion, but it doesn't happen very often. It happened on 4 different films just randomly. I checked the film path and cleaned it, first in case it was sticking on something. I left the projector over night and tried a short movie in it, today and it seemed to work ok.Tried it again this evening and it randomly chatters again.

Norm,
Welcome to the Forum! As Pat suggested, it does sound like a loop problem. When this occurs do either of the loops (before and after the gate) get smaller? Since the projector hasn't been used for some time, let it run for ten minutes without any film. After you've threaded it up, see if the feed reel looks like it's being pulled in a jerky uneven motion while running.
There's always the chance that this could be solved by lubricating your films. Dry, brittle films can cause this type of problem. You can use the Forum's search function to check up on FilmGuard or Film Renew.

Thank you for your suggestions, gentlemen. Like I said above the problem only happens once in a while and in multiple films. and not in the same chunk of film. If i rewind a little and play it again, no chattering. By my pushing up on the bottom plastic film guide it pushs the film tighter to the drive wheel, the wheel with the little gear teeth to pull the film through. I live in a very small town and nobody I know knows anything about projectors. The notches in the films look normal. It seems like the film is sticking and causing the film to skip over the drive gear teeth maybe? The teeth look ok. The thought of soaking my five films in a solution scares me, lol. I would like to build up a large library of films but I would like this problem solved first. Love my silent movies, have waited too many years to start collecting.
