Hello guys,

today I bought my first sound projector.
The guy who sold it to me is a collector, he didn't mention it can play regular film also, buy after I came home and looked the projector on the net I show it can play standard 8mm.

So I did some research and I see something about an extra gate and sprocket....
As I am kind of new to the whole 8mm thing, i'm not exactly as to what these parts are.
I searched under the side cover, etc. but didn't find any extra parts.

It plays super8 fine and the sound is clear and loud.
The bad thing is that the lamp broke after 30 mins, so i'll have to wait until tomorrow to go to the seller and get a new one (he told me he has a few).
Can someone please send me a photo or some description of the extra parts? If they were not included in the projector and the seller doesn't have them, is there any way to find them??

Also, I would really really appreciate if someone has an english manual for the above projector.

Hello Ilia. First: does the machine read on the front cover Super/single/standard 8mm? If not, then it doesn't play standard 8mm sound films as well as super 8. I've had the 802 and the same machine isn't a dual 8; it only plays super 8 sound. Don't be be mislead that single 8 means standard 8mm. It doesn't. If you don't mind having just a super 8 sound machine then you'll be happy providing it doesn't play slowly in both 24 and 18 FPS. The Eumig 800 series are notorious for slowing down and it takes hours to fix. Again: The cover must read super/single/standard or else it will only play super 8 sound. Hope this helps.--John

While the The Eumig Mark S 802 is only for Super 8, the 802D is a dual 8mm sound projector. When new, the projector came with 2 sets of sprockets and 2 film gates depending on which format you wanted to project. There is currently an 802D on eBay which has a picture of the gate and sprockets.

Thanks for your replies guys.

My projector is the Dual, has the D and also mentiones Regular/standard/super 8 on the shell.

@ douglas, thanks for the ebay link, it helped a lot to understand which parts exactly I do need.

To be honest, I bought the projector knowing that it was able to handle only Super8, so when I can home and found out about the standard 8 I thought It was a great added bonus.

Let me ask you though something, I read various old threads in the forum, and I got to understand that even if you have the whole set of extra parts, it is not advisable to change frequently the format. Is this correct? Can you really do damage to the projector If you change the parts all the time?

Oh, and one more question, someone told me that I should not run silent movies on my sound projector, because they cause damange to the sound head. Is this at all true?

The extra set of sprockets may be within the side cover that comes off to change the lamp/clean the gate etc.. I have an 810D and the sprockets are spindled in the cover. The second gate is above the lamp but just set back to the left a little.

I change from Super 8 to standard 8 regularly as it is used for cine transfer work as it is possible to make these machines run at 16.66fps essential for this work.

Silent films harming sound heads is rubbish. Eumig's aren't the best machines and certainly their sound heads are renowned for being weaker than other makes but just go ahead and use your new toy and enjoy it. If it ever wears out just get another or better still, get a decent Elmo.

Ilias,
if you do get the standard 8 parts DO NOT CHANGE THE GATE WITHOUT LOOKING AT INSTRUCTIONS. These machines have an inching knob at the opposite end from the lens, it is essential that this is turned so the the dot marking is at the top (double check this with your machine's instructions) in order to retract the claw at the gate enough to remove the super 8 gate.

So,
@ John Clancy: thanks a lot for the advices. I really feel the same way about whatever items, collectible or not that I own, USE THEM [Big Grin]

and if they broke get a new one! That's the best advice to enjoy whichever hobby! I already checked under the cover and inside the projector at all places I could imagine, but nothing, so I guess they weren't included. It would be nice to have sound for regular8, but in any case I bought the projector only for super8. I definetely want to get an elmo at some point, but for now i'm happy with what I have and just want to build up a nice film collection [Big Grin]

@ John Davis: thanks a lot for the advice. The guy who sold me the projecto showed me the knob and how to remove the "windows" (dunno if its the correct term) for cleaning. Also I managed to find a manual at some site yesterday.

nicely done winbert, thanks for posting the photo also here.

So, concerning my projector, I just spoke with the collector who sold it to me, it turns out that the specific projector doesn't have the switch for the standard magnetic head, although it has the abitily to accept the other parts of the standard 8mm.

Dunno what happened, maybe someone just changed the cover and my model is not actually D. Tomorrow hopefully i'll get a new lamp, so when I open it i'll search in the inside for any stickers or other info.

I say! If the inside cover shows a gate but no sprockets - which means the proj is set for Super 8, removing the Super8 sprockets and changing the gate from the one that says S should reveal the Std 8 sprockets as the built in ones. Hope this makes sense!!

Bulb Life.....do not move the projector for at least 30 minutes after a show to avoid damaging the hot bulb filament with vibrations.

Thanks for the tip Thomas!!!
I bought a new lamp today and got my eumig up and running again.
I'll be extra carefull with the lamp in order to prolong its life [Wink]

I'll go get an extra one at some point...with more watt !

The one that was in the projector was 75watt, but the sticker inside the projector and the lettering on the back, state that it can handle 100watt!
