To be very honest, our deal with the hotel depends on the number of rooms reserved. The discounted room rate, the rental cost of the dealer/screening area, tables, chairs etc., is contingent on booking a minimum number of rooms.

So....although October 15th and 16th may seem like a long time away, it would help us greatly if you could give a call to the Ocean Holiday Resort and make a reservation.

The details:

Saturday October 15th and Sunday October 16th, 2011

The Ocean Holiday Resort
6501 Ocean Avenue
Wildwood Crest, NJ 08260
609-729-2900 (mention "Film Show" to receive special rate of $65.00 per room)
Reserve early to get Oceanfront rooms with private balconies!

This will be a great Super 8mm/16mm weekend. Bring your films to sell or trade and help us honor the memory of our good friend John Black.

I don't know off hand how much it would cost to rent a room for two days at that hotel, but I'm betting it would be more than just renting from some renky dink Motel 6. In order to go, my wife and I will be cutting costs to the bone, so while we will be there, we probably won't be staying that hotel, but just being there for the actual event ...

but that's really the best we can do. We taint' rich ... yet.

I will be making my reservations this coming week for my wife and I. I am very excited to be there in person. Plus "Shorty" promised me an autograph! That alone makes it worth the trip. [Cool]

Forgive me Doug as I would love to come but will be spending a brazillion dollars in September going to the UK with the wife for the 9.5 event....I know John would understand...But I hope the rest of the guys pile in the cars and head over. You should promote on the silent film/silent comedy forums as those guys are all film collectors...

Shorty's giving autographs? Even more reason to go!

I have to look into airline flights. Our van is starting to go kaput, so we have no option except that, (unless, amtrak actually goes right to there, or close by, but fortunately, we have two and a half months until then!)

Paul,

CineSea 4 is a definite go! We are hoping to get more hotel bookings to lower the overall expense, but this gathering of film collectors is happening! Lou Franchetti, Shorty, Steve Klare and myself are committed to this, especially in honor of John Black.
We're arranging a presentation or two (details forthcoming) and Steve Osborne of The Reel Image will be sending us plenty of goodies to screen.
The current issue of Classic Images has an ad for CineSea 4 and a wonderful remembrance of John B., written by Shorty.

I really think for the future, if this show continues, you should move it somewhere nearer to NYC. You'd get a lot more people there, including more dealers.

Blackie and I did talk about getting this to NY, and since some film-realted shows are held at the Holiday Inn, why not there? - It's at 440 W.57th, many GOTHAM collector shows were and are held there, including record collector expos. I feel this is a strategic spot to attract collectors/dealers - Thing is, to work an arrangement with them - We'd be in good company, the COMIC-CON is held at Penn Plaza across from Penn Station (not coincidentally), and NY is known as a haven to collectors and nostalgia gatherings - We might even get Joe Franklin there one day - Just an idea from Shorty (mostly from Blackie)

Well I don't think that I would attend if it was held in NYC. First the exhorbitant expense of hotel rooms, and then the horrendous traffic and parking issues. I vote keep it where it is in a relatively quiet area right by the ocean.

I'm fond of John's concept of Cine by the Sea. Kind of like a Super 8mm vacation.

I think one thing to consider is that a lot of people cannot justify the cost of a trip to a film convention just by itself. For example, there is no way that I could justify a trip to the UK solely to go to the BFCC. But, combine it into a vacation of one or two weeks and it becomes a viable proposition. So I think if you want to bring people in from across the country, as opposed to just the local NYC area, then the venue needs to be in an area which is appealing for an extended vacation stay or as a stop-off on a longer trip. I'm not knocking the Big Apple in any way, NYC has a whole lot of great things to see, but for people who don't live there it can definately be an intimidating proposition.

I know NYC pretty well and would be more inclined to make the effort to attend a convention there. I have a feeling that the same goes for many European based collectors.
It's just easier to get to, if nothing else.
Good luck with the show next month though. Hope it goes off well.

In the long term I'd like to see it closer to NYC myself. The thing you run into is the exponential rise in costs as you get closer to midtown Manhattan.

What you can do to reduce the costs and still have the tourism benefits as a plus is to be out on the fringes of the NYC rapid transit system.

I dunno...maybe somewhere East of Manhattan...(for some reason the idea appeals to me.) [Wink]

All I know is I had a great time at the first one, but I had to miss the next two for family committments. I'm making it a priority to get there this time.

Doesn't have to be IN NYC - just nearer -- maybe somewhere in
Northern NJ?

The problem with Wildwood is that it's in the middle of nowhere.

If it were in NYC We would not be able to only charge $20.00 per table,The Expense would be at least 5 times what it is now. If we ever had to consider moving for [LIST] any reason how about the old spot where Jim Dubin had his in Cherry Hill I know the people running other shows there now.

Sorry, unless someone here owns a hotel w/convention space, NYC and the surrounding area are nowhere near an option. John had connections at Wildwood, which gets completely booked up for the season, not only for being on the shore but also for its proximity to Atlantic City.

Totally understand the reasons (i.e., expense, etc.) for holding Cinesea in its current location. It's just that for me (selfishly), I definitely could attend the convention if it was in the NYC area as it's easier to get to and I'm there quite often.

That being said, hope Cinesea is a success and wish I could be there!
