Thomas, try to things ...
1. View the film as it passes through the optical lense area.
a. Is the optical lense "flickering" (like a flame?), that could mean that it is indeed getting neqar to expiration.
b. If the lamp's burning is steady and rock on solid, does the film, as it passes over the optical lamp, vibrate? (have a bend?). That is, is the passage smooth over the optical lamp or a "bumpy ride"?
