While browsing around Youtube I discovered the most amazing footage that I never knew existed. Apparantly a TV crew went behind the scenes on Horror of Frankenstein (of course a super 8 Derann release) and filmed priceless footage of Ralph Bates, Dave Prowse, and a visiting Peter Cushing. I wish there was a photo of me seeing it for the first time... I think my jaw was on the floor the entire time! It's great just when you think you've seen it all - life throws you a nice little surprise like this. I'm sure you guys will enjoy this as much as I did.

Funny when you think about what becomes famous over time. If you saw that when it first came out you would think you are looking at a small Indie Film that might have gone nowhere. But time has proven that the Hammer machine really touched a spark with horror fans worldwide. When I was younger Christopher Lee I bought as a vampire and I was terrified. But Bela Lugosi never did it for me.

Ted Newsom "FLESH & BLOOD : A Heritage of Horror" available
from Image Entertainment DVD,That is chock full of interviews
and clips and runs for 99 mins. For anyone that has an interest in Hammer, this is a must.

That documentary is OK not great. The footage is all basically just from trailers with more current interviews. There is nothing in it as good as that Youtube clip which really captures the atmosphere of being there on the set.

I think it could have come from the BBC Doc on Hammer back in
the '70s that had interviews with all the staff at Hammer at the
time.Further clips are on there. The Newsom doc I like because it was the last thing that Peter Cushing did and my mate the late
but great Harry Nadler was involved.

Those with an interest in classic horror may be interested in it.

Now all I have to do is find behind the scenes footage of Scars of Dracula... then I can die a VERY happy man. I know people are down on them, but Horror of Frankenstein and Scars are both personal favorites of mine (more Scars, but as a double feature I deeply love them both). I think it has to do with discovering them on Super 8 (digests and features) for the first time as a teenager. It's very nostalgic for me to watch them. I remember in high school writing out the entire script for Scars by memory in my notebook rather than listening to my teachers. That may be why my grades were so bad!

By the way, the other great BBC behind the scenes segment out there is one filmed by the BBC during the production of "Lust for a Vampire." I don't see it on Youtube... I have it on VHS somewhere and it's also amazing. In it, Yutte Stensgaard is interviewed and says she hopes to "win an Oscar sometime." Didn't quite work out that way!

Personally I was never that keen on either "Horror" or "Scars",
and I have them both!Even Dave Prowse didn't seem too keen
when in conversation with myself and Wayne Kinsey. One of the
reasons I like the Newsom doc is because half of the people that are intervierviewed in it are no longer with us, including my pal. Remember this was made '96/97 and quite a few have gone.
If you like the Hammer scene Brian, you can't do better than
"Little Shoppe of Horrors" or Wayne's "The House that Hammer
Built". The latest issue of LSOH dealing with their new film
"The Woman in Black."Both mags give insight into the workings
of the studio.

Hugh - Of course I am an avid reader of all the Hammer 'zines especially LSoH. I highly recommend picking up the latest issue. After reading it, I am looking forward to seeing Woman in Black. The other recent Hammer film, Let Me In, was pretty spooky. I am a little reluctant to accept the new Hammer releases since I don't think you can ever go back and recreate the magic of the originals... but it seems to be going OK so far. It's nice Woman in Black is going back to the gothic look. I hope it finds an audience. Maybe the Harry Potter kids will all go to see Daniel Radcliffe.

When did you chat with Dave Prowse? I would love to meet him face to face one day and tell him how much I enjoy his Frankenstein films (something he probably doesn't get too much). I've always been a big fan of his from Clockwork Orange on...

Hi Brian,I agree totally on the new Hammer films, like the man said
you can't go back. The old Hammer films had a certain look to them that will never be recaptured,Jack Asher,Bernard Robinson
and Terence Fisher are all gone and talent like that can't be
taught in film school.Regarding "Big Dave",I met him at the
Manchester Film Festival, and Wayne and myself engaged him in
conversation because he recognised my Cumbrian accent, telling
us that he had worked in my "neck of the woods" making road
safety films in the 1970's as "The Green Cross Coce Man" and
had used the roads in Carlisle, which being a Northern city is
not as hectic as London etc and so filming was a lot easier.
It was during this that of course his Frankenstein was mentioned, and even he expressed some disappointment on
the outcome, which was sad as he made quite a fearsome
creature. At that time he was also disappointed that they were
going to use someone else as Darth Vader on the next Star Wars film.Of coure we tried to reassure him that he might have
got it wrong, not knowing that these were "prequels" and Darth
would be a youngster. He is a very nice gentle man and he still has a lot of fans. From what I can remember I am sure he had
connections with a model company making figurines of fantasy
subjects from film.Shotly after that he did have a spell in
Hospital for a leg operation(he had been wearing a brace at the
time) and as far as I know is still ok.
