Do you mean standard (regular) 8 sound?

If so, the dual Eumigs are very good. Providing it's been well looked after, and serviced regularly, as they are now getting rather old.

If you do buy one make sure all the "bits" are with it for the gauge change. (They have a habit of "walking").

There are not too many 8mm projectors with sound, so you only have to choose from few of them.

I guess the answer will be EUMIG.

My advice Jim,for what it's worth,I have used the old Eumig Mark S
sound projectors, you should be able to get one relatively cheap,
they are sturdy, reliable and take care of your film. The down side is that they suffer from "hum" at high volume, but I can't say that
it has ever spoiled a show,as you have to turn the wick up full to hear it.The main thing is that there is nothing to wear out, as for the soundheads you can still obtain them or have them
re profiled,as I have had done.There are also the Silma's but I
haven't had any experience of them.Best of luck

Hugh,

Does that model not have the rubber disk drives -- because they are the Achilles heel of many Eumigs needed for sound.

Indeed hum on Series 800 Eumig may be an issue, since I have owned my S 804D for almost 27 years now and have often regretted such a flaw, But I've recently purchased its elder brother, model 824; same sturdy mechanics but sound section better engineered; not only is hum considerably lower than on model 804 (on par with later series, I would say, or thereabouts), but it also has a nice feature: when the main control knob is in the stop position, the audio is switched off so you don't get any hum at all. The sound amplifier is only activated when the main control knob is on "Lamp on" (in forward mode). Ah, and yes it's also REG 8 capable and has a much faster and more versatile lens than the standard "Vario Eupronet" (F: 1.7!) found on 804's: in fact this beauty comes with a Suprogon F1.2. Additional features include a frame counter which recording is slaved to (hence the tag "Sonomatic" added to the name of the model), a main electric switch, and an overall better sound quality on both tracks. Finally a feature those who screen sound Reg 8 will love: the gate on all Dual Guage Eumigs is built in such a way the lower loop conforms to the standard 52 frames image-to-sound distance, so perfect sync is assured. Not so with Silmas, to the best of my knowledge, not mentioning the fact the latter ones lack the upper sprocket.

As for the problem poited out by Tony: it can be fixed easily with a tiny piece of finest sandpaper to be used on the discs very gently; as discussed many times this will restore the discs' original grip properties, possibly after some lubricant refreshment on all gears, cogs etc if required. In short, IMHO fear of this problem should not deter to purchase ANY Eumig model...

Hello Tony, yes the old Mark S machines have the disc drives,
which I find are not so much an Achilles heel but a positive bonus,
there are no rubber belts to contend with, and are easily
rejuvenated with a rub with sandpaper and even giving the ball
a "roughing up" helps too.Another benefit that hasn't been
mentioned is the ability to vary the loop size for sound separation.
Sometimes a film has been recorded out of sync, this is simply
rectified by altering the size of the loop to achieve sync.I believe
sound separation is 56 frames, so that gives ample scope either
way to give correct synchronisation.

My Eumig 810D is pushing 40 and all the sandpapering, lubrication, etc. is no longer enough to put humpty back together again. My machine was used A LOT back in the '70s, though.
