Just bought Walton's excellent 200' cut-down of Laurel & Hardy 1929 "The Hoose-Gow", their seventh sound film. I was surprised that the credit title had the music of "That's My Weakness Now" instead of the usual beloved "Dance Of The Cuckoos".
I understand (after using Google) that Cuckoos was first heard on the Spanish version of their ninth sound film "Night Owls" (1930). The next release, their tenth sound film "Blotto" (1930) now had their famous opener.
The theme tune was composed by Hal Roach musical director, Marvin Hatley, as the on-the-hour chime for the Roach studio radio station. Stan heard it and asked Hatley to use it as the Laurel & Hardy theme song.
