A collector friend has told me about a rarity he has that I've never heard of on Super 8, so I wondered if anyone else has come across it or seen it mentioned on publicity material. It's a 2 x 400' version of THE SWEENEY released by Iver Film Services. When he bought it, he was concerned that it might be one of the Walton 3 x 400' Sweeney TV episodes with a reel missing, but it turned out to be a reasonably well edited version of the feature. It was sold in plain boxes, so I wondered if it might have been a test print of a late release that never ended up on sale?

It was actually an official Iver release,I remember seeing it on a Regent Films list,it was released at the same tima as Ivers 2 x 400ft To The Devil a Daughter, probably not many prints struck though.

Mark (or anyone) - have you ever seen the original packaging? I have Iver's 'To The Devil A Daughter' (not one of the later Derann copies) and it's interesting that it was sold in two Walton-style plastic boxes instead of the usual Iver 2 x 400' cases. I've never seen another Iver release in these, so perhaps the two films were their last 2 x 400s.

Intriguing! I bought my Iver 'To the Devil a Daughter' brand new and the box lables are quite nice and exactly the right size to match the boxes. I can only presume that towards the end, they ran out of the 2 x 400' cases and decided that it wouldn't be cost-effective to have another batch made, so decided to use the same plastic boxes as Walton. I know they had some sort of distribution deal with Walton as I recall seeing Iver titles on sale at a Walton open day event I went to.
If Barry Attwood is still dropping in here, I wonder if he has come across 'The Sweeney' because it seems exceptionally hard to find.

Hi Adrian,
Yes I have had a couple of "The Sweeney" come through my hands, they appeared at the same time as "All Creatures Great and Small" (2x400') & "To The Devil a Daughter" "2x400'), but I don't think many were struck, the couple I had were in plain boxes, but may not have been the original ones, I didn't run them all the way through, but the quality was quite good as I remember (a few years back now).

We do have a copy of the 400ft iver release of Cross of Iron, this one does come up now and again but the one we wanted and paid for was the 3 x 400ft version which they announced, unfortunatly after two months of waiting our money was refunded to us by the administrating company as Iver films had ceased trading. We were well gutted, this would have been a great title to have owned as a 3 400.

Hi Tom you can pick up a nice 3 x400 later poly version of Cross of Iron on German Ebay OK ( you probably know )and if you have a handy re-record friend bobs your uncle.
I liked the 400 version except the end was altered from the actual film making you think Steiner shot the iffy Iron Cross obsessed commanding officer, when he actually threw him a gun and went off with him.
Great film in many ways, the intro titles are fantastic as well on the feature.
Shows very nicely on DVD but you can`t beat even the 400 digest.

Yes it gives from Germany a 3 x 400 feet Version from "Cross of Iron"...and it gives a 3 x 400 Version from Part Two with Richard Burton. I have never seen a Version from Iver Film. From "To the Devil a Daughter" gives a Two Reeler on 2 x 400 feet from UFA...with great colors and sharp!

Mark - congratulations on a very interesting site, a great resource for anyone interested in the whole history of the company. I only wish they could have kept their Super 8 releases going for longer. Their video 'nasties' seem to link in with Barry Attwood's reports that they 'unofficially' released one or two on Super 8. It's amusing to see the words "COLOUR SOUND" so prominent on the ad for the video release of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"!

Two films on this thread I would defiantly like to get, The Sweeney movie Iver release 2 x 400ft, I do remember seeing this released. And the German 3 x 400ft Cross of Iron, I'd find a way to get the sound re recorded.

I remember as a young teenager going into the photographic department of Woolco - 30 odd years ago and saw the iver release of "The Sweeney " for sale - it was in the classic iver double clam shell bookcase and I seem to remember John thaw and Dennis Waterman in a colour still on the front. I love this film and own it on DVD - but try as I might I think I've seen the 2x400ft come up 3 or 4 times in 20 years.
