When projecting silent Super 8 on a sound projector, does the sound head not cause unessecary wear to the film strip given that the edge of the strip is passing over the head regardless of a sound stripe being present or not?

A silent film, as long as it has no magnetic stripe, will presumably cause much less wear on the sound head as the film base is perfectly smooth. But there will still be some wear. Many projectors have a silent projection position on the control knob which lifts off the pressure pads from the sound head, thus totally eliminating any head wear. The Eumig 900 series all have this feature, as does the Elmo GS1200 (by switching to optical playback mode). I am sure there are many others.

The sound head itself should be really smooth, after all it gets polished by the stripe whenever a mag sound film is in there. It shouldn't do a lot of wear on the film surface when the stripe isn't there.
-besides that, the stripe area is outside the standard frame, so even if there is some wear on the film it won't ever show on screen.

Thanks. I've only ever used a silent projector, a Kodak Instamatic M65A, but may be looking to acquire another unit. Missed out on a really nice Minolta Sound 6000 that was in mint condition recently that went for about $53.00. Mind you, I don't need sound (I've never collected digests) but I'm sure if I acquire another unit it will most likely be sound capable, so this is why I asked.
