I was watching a JAWS super 8 200ft silent color digest on youtube ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aD7aAe9X4M

... and I noticed that there is that wonderful little moment where Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw compare "man-li-ness" by Shaw crunching beer can, and Dreyfuss crunching a styro-foam cup.

Now, I'll need to pull out my 2X400ft digest, but I don't seem to remember that in the letterboxed 2X400ft, but it appears to be in the 200ft edition.

If this is not in the 2X400ft edition (a pity, as it's a wonderful moment), what other footage is in the 200ft that's not in the 2X400ft digest?

Of course, if you were to incorporate the missing footage, it wouldn't be letterboxed like the rest, but it's still interesting, just the same. [Smile]

The one great moment they have missed out on all versions.... coz it had nothing directly to do with the main storyline.... is where Chief Brody is sitting at home around the table deep in thought contemplating, subconsciously rubbing his fingers together, and his son is sitting near him imitating all his moves.Wonderful stuff!

I remember that well, as well, I thought it was a wonderful moment that you usually wouldn't see in a horror/action movie and just gave us a further touch of just how special Speilberg was, and would turn out to be. In nearly all of his films, he has these little scenes which, while not absolutely necessary to the story, add just that extra depth of character and makes you care just that much more for the characters when they are in fukll "crisis mode" in the story-line ...

A touch that many film-makers lose in modern horror, for instance. In Vincent Price's Horror films, even if he was the bad guy, you could always sympathize with his characters, as there was a always a tragic side to the character.

I agree, of course that the Speilberg is a genius.

But, don't forget that he had studio support.

What I mean is, how many directors today could shoot that scene and be allowed it in final cut?

Rob, at the time "Jaws" was made, Spielberg didn't have the clout that he eventually achieved. So, I doubt the decision to keep the scene had anything to do with Spielberg being Spielberg. That being said, I love this moment in the film and shows how human moments can add so much to a film.

That's true, William, but didn't he still have a surprising amount of support even at such a young age, having proved his abilities in television.

Perhaps it might be fairer to say that studios at that time were more willing to take chances on the integrity of young, talented and hard working directors?

Maybe allowing a little more creative initiative than is currently tolerated? Perhaps I'm wrong though...

Although that scene is so Spielberg that I bet he improvised it, and fair play to the man, who wouldn't love it? [Smile]
