Hi everyone.

I am a bit new to the projector world and I have a question which is very basic.

How freely should the shutter wheel spin?

I was recently given a Chinon 727 Whisper Dual 8 and the shutter wheel belt had melted into the works a bit. I was able to remove almost all of the mess with alcohol and cotton swabs but the shutter wheel seems pretty tight to me. Is this normal or should it be pretty free spinning? I'm trying to determine how much further I need to disassemble and clean the projector.

Thanks!

Hi Clay,

-and welcome!

Any projector I've ever messed with, the shutter is pretty closely connected mechanically to the motor, so if you tried to spin the shutter by hand you are dragging the whole drive train along for the ride.

-so it shouldn't be six foot lever kind of stiff, but it won't be a flick of the finger easy either.

Maybe you should try powering it up, being at the ready to stop if all you get from the motor is an angry hum. (Too many seconds in this mode will produce smoke and sorrow!)

Edit: I'm assuming you've already replaced the belt, but even with the motor out of the equation you'd still be dragging quite a bit of stuff along.

Thanks for the feedback. No the belt is not back on yet (I should be receiving it in the mail soon) but it seems like the wheel is going to be a bit tight for the belt to be able to easily move it. Once I get the belt I will try what you suggest.

Thanks for the feedback!

-in other words, if you placed a finger on the surface of wheel and pushed, the wheel would stay still but the finger would slip?

No, it will move. Just tight.

Well...

There is a reasonable amount of machinery connected up even with the motor belt out.

Could also be a case of some lube that's gone hard over the years.

Here is what the Chinon Whisper 727 looks like with the back cover removed.

Hello everyone.

I got my belt and everything is spinning along as it should! I got the film threaded and it turns out the take up reel isn't spinning. The spring belt is moving the take up wheel is just very still. trying to lube now.

Will update.

Thanks!
