What Super 8 projectors with optical audio do you have? Are you satisfied?
I have this Eumig, released in two versions (A-B, see Super8data), which I think is the only Eumig model with optical audio:

 -

Who has optical Elmo?
I also remember a Fumeo who had a friend...

Hi Luigi,
That optical Eumig 800 series is a rare beast indeed! I have never seen one but have always been interested in exactly how they implemented the optical sound reader into the projector. Any chance you can post some pics of the optical sound area?

My Fumeo 9119 has optical sound. So has my GS 1200 and one of my two GS 800 (the second one is magnetic only). I have also an Eumig like yours.

I have a little Bauer which also has optical sound. It's the Bauer T190 ML Sound. I had to buy it as it has my initials. [Big Grin]

Luigi, you lucky son of a gun!

I once had one of these and completely wore it out! The optical sound has INCREDIBLE low end "bass" to the audio and it has a warmth that not all optical sound super 8 projectors can reproduce!

These ARE hard to come by. thy are also, (as most Eumigs) very kind to you're film collection!

[Smile] I have only one problem with the projector, unfortunately I haven't got it here yet!
I got it on ebay, but the seller is slow to send it to me.
I too am curious, Paul, Osi, to feel its quality or to see what the optical part is, unique in its kind.
Dom, you have it, what do you say? Is it a good projector?

An example of (magnetic) operation of "my" projector. You can see the moment in which the magnetic heads are excluded and the optical function enters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnFM5kqHXd4

Dom, you have the projector:
1) Do you have the manual? Otherwise I have to buy it on the various sites
2) Does the optical function work well? Do you have an exciter light bulb?

I have a Yashica P810 that has dual Magnetic/Optical sound. I only have one film that has an optical track that I bought just to test it. It worked fine. I love this projector and use is primarily to run film to capture the audio for my telecined footage.

Luigi, I'm not sure I have a manual of this model. I know I have one but since I have several Eumig of this serie, it's probably not the manual for the magnetic/optical model. I'll check but it may take some time. So far I've had no need to replace the exciter lamp so I have never open this part to see how it looks like.

Paul, I had just a quick look yesterday, it seems that it's not so easy to open the part where the sound cell is but I will check again and see if I can take a picture.

That would be great Dom. I am really intrigued to find out exactly how Eumig implemented the optical sound into the Mark S projector. Looking at Luigi's picture my first impression is that the optical head or magnetic head rotate into place when you turn that extra knob by 180 degrees, but I may be totally wrong!
Interesting also that Eumig never made another optical sound projector.

Not sure it will help to understand completely how it's designed but that's the best I can do without opening the low part, which I'm reluctent to do since you have to remove all the knobs (and they are strongly fixed) and if it's unecessary I prefer to avoid risking any problem. I will probably eventually havee to open that part to replace the exciter lamp so I will take more pictures then.

Thank's for that picture Dom. Looks like my thought of a rotating head was wrong, but that 180 degree motion of that knob is still a puzzle - maybe its just a switch. The side knobs typically pull off on these Eumig's, but they can be very tight and I totally understand your concern about risking unnecessary damage to your machine, which I would hate to be the cause of! If some day you do have it off for maintenance or repair then that would be a great opportunity to get some close up pics of the optical deign.

I have the same issue with my Yashica P810. I don't have a clue to how to replace the exciter lamp. Nothing in the owner's manual either. Since I don't use it for optical sound...I'll probably never be faced with this dilemma.

There is an add for the same Eumig projector and the seller put a picture with the lower part open : https://www.ebay.fr/i/174070039699?campaign-id=90001&run-date=20191028020000&templateId=05034aac-a67f-4df1-ab22-54c858648eee&templateVersion=12&co=12&placement-type=mfe.piyiP&user- id=43031808821&instance=1572253200&site-id=71&trackingCode=16TE79004_T_ALL_ORM&placement-type-name=mfe.piyiP&mfe-Id=100690&ul_ref=https%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F2 %252F0%252F8%253Fbu%253D43031808821%2526segname%253D16TE79004_T_ALL_ORM%2526crd%253D20191028020000%2526mpre%253Dhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.ebay.fr%25252Fulk%25252Fi%25252F174070 039699%25253Fcampaign-id%25253D90001%252526run-date%25253D20191028020000%252526templateId%25253D05034aac-a67f-4df1-ab22-54c858648eee%252526templateVersion%25253D12%252526co%25253D1 2%252526placement-type%25253Dmfe.piyiP%252526user-id%25253D43031808821%252526instance%25253D1572253200%252526site-id%25253D71%252526trackingCode%25253D16TE79004_T_ALL_ORM%252526pla cement-type-name%25253Dmfe.piyiP%252526mfe-Id%25253D100690%2526ch%253Dosgood%2526url%253Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.fr%252Fulk%252Fi%252F174070039699%253Fcampaign-id%253D%2524%25 7BcampaignId%257D%2526run-date%253D%2524%257BRUN_DT%257D%2526TemplateId%253D%2524%257BtemplateId%257D%2526TemplateVersion%253D%2524%257BtemplateVersion%257D%2526co%253D%2524%257Bli nkOrder%257D%2526placement-type%253D%2524%257BplacementType%257D%2526user-id%253D%2524%257BENCRYPTED_USER_ID%257D%2526instance%253D%2524%257BINSTANCE_ID%257D%2526site-id%253D%2524% 257BSITE_ID%257D%2526TrackingCode%253D%2524%257BTrackingCode%257D%2526placement-type-name%253D%2524%257BplacementType%257D%2526mfe-Id%253D%2524%257BmfeId%257D%2526osub%253D0%2526so jTags%253Demid%253Dbu%252Csegname%253Dsegname%252Ccrd%253Dcrd%252Curl%253Durl%252Cch%253Dch%252Cosub%253Dosub%2526srcrot%253D0%2526rvr_id%253D0%2526rvr_ts%253D11c33dfe16e0a4e8bf019 ba6ffc202ec&ul_noapp=true

Thank's Dom, that ebay picture answers a lot of questions.

 -

 -

It now appears that the big 180 degree knob is nothing more than some kind of electrical switch, although it may also perform a mechanical function to lift off the pressure from the magnetic heads during optical playback. My speculation that it might be used to swing the magnetic or optical head into position was way off base and way too complex! [Roll Eyes] The optical head and magnetic head are integrated together into one structure - a combined mag and optical head. The magnetic head portion is located of course in exactly the same place as on all the Mark S series magnetic sound projectors. The optical head portion is mounted a distance of 6 super 8 frames further away from the magnetic head. I think you can see the photodiode in the picture. There is some sort of sliding switch on a linkage bar near the rear sprocket. Not sure what this does, although it may be mechanically linked to the shaft of the big 180 degree knob to switch on the optical reader light. That white disc thing on top of the head must be to block/reflect light from the projector bulb from reaching the photocell.
Looks like a wonderful projector. You have to hand it to Eumig for being able to cram the additional optical sound system into the already ultra-compact magnetic sound Mark S - "The Wizard's of Vienna" indeed! [Smile]
Thanks Dom.

Janice!

That's the very same model that I had for years that I couldn't ever get around to fixing, but when it ran, it had a very "warm" optical sound, lots of bottom to it!

I also have a mag/optical Chinon Sound 9000 MV.
https://www.van-eck.net/img/itable/images/film_chinon_9000_1434638659484.jpg
It beats me how the exciter lamps are changed on this model, and also the Eumig and Bauer. Perhaps not an owner, only a servicing dealer.

Paul, I've just checked. There is no white disc, it's one of the two wires located there (the picture is confusing). There is a specific bulb for reading the optical sound ; it lights on when I switch the button on the optical position when the projector lamp is not on. Hope what I describe is clear.
