Ok. Here is the story. My boss at work had a guy come in that he knew from the 6o's. He saw me on Ebay and he said he had a lot of "junk". Would I want to buy any of it? I told him to bring in what he had. So this is what he brought in.

Wow. I have never seen such a nice ST1200HD. And I have owned 2!
The only thing that were loose were the belts. So I ordered the belts and voila! Perfect machine! And I changed the bulb. Its very nice! I was going to keep it but my GS would get jealous! [Smile]

Haha! I didn't recognize your eBay ID but I sure did recognize the wall pattern behind the projector! Just saw the auction minutes before reading this thread [Wink]

I'm just glad you rescued this machine from being dumped as "junk" - it boggles the mind to think some people just don't know what they have on their hands. [Eek!]

Actually this guy thought he had gold on his hands! He told me that the machine was being sold in Amsterdam for $1200! I told him that no...the reels can accept 1200ft reels but the machine is not worth $1200. Then I had to sadly inform him that it was an ST1200 and not a GS1200!
Thats what he thought it was! [Smile]

I actually was under the same mistaken impression back when I first rediscovered super-8 (before I joined this forum)... began to notice the ST1200 and thought to myself "why is that high-end Elmo machine so cheap all of a sudden?" [Roll Eyes]

What's the difference between an ST1200 and a GS1200?

That's exactly what I wondered at first, too - well, the difference is quite dramatic, actually! You see, the ST1200 has one AC motor, also a central rotary switch to control all the forward/reverse functions as well as an EFR lamp - and it's a twin-track mono sound projector. Really, a very mechanical thing (but very well designed).
The GS1200 is MUCH more sophisticated as it has (for starters) FOUR motors for film transport, the reels and for cooling, it uses a 24V/250W (ELC, I think?) - correction: 24V/200W EJL or ESC - lamp, also it has electronic touch keys instead of the rotary switch and last but not least it is a true stereo machine. Finally, it has the all-important capability of syncing to an external source so you can either re-record the soundtrack on your feature films or show them with the sound coming off a DVD in true 5.1 digital quality [Smile]

Now when I said the difference was dramatic - I meant it [Big Grin]

Jan, thanks for the reply! [Smile]

Wow! That is a large difference between the two. I guess the GS machines also sell for a LOT more.

Darn, I was bidding on the ST1200HD listed above, but it closed yesterday with a winning bid of around $800. I guess I could have gone higher, but alas, I wasn't yet prepared to put out that much money!

Mike.

Jan,
Its not a 24V 250W lamp but an ESC 24V 200W. The EJL 24V 200W lamp can be used as a substitute.
I would not advise anyone to use the 250W lamp as it trys to draw another 2 amps from the mains transformer. The transformer can not deliver this extra current and may result in a burnt out transformer in the long term.
Your other comments are spot on but this one about the lamp is one I have been trying to stamp on for a long time as it could be the demise of an otherwise perfectly working GS for which transformers are no longer available. [Frown]
BTW the ESC lamp (200W) is brighter than the ELC 250W. There is 2 reasons for this:
1, The filament of the ESC is smaller to concentrate the light on the smaller 8mm gate.
2, The 250W delivers less light in the GS because the extra current it trys to draw results in a lower voltage at the lamp contacts.
NO NO NO to the ELC 24V 250W lamp if you want your GS to last.

Kev.

GS1200 Xenon with Elmo 1.0...great combo along with a 16-CL Xenon for that super bright white light.

Sorry for the little faux-pas Kevin, and thanks for all the extra info [Smile] Not being a GS1200 owner I'm just happy as long as I can keep EFR and EFP lamps apart, the other codes just get me confused [Big Grin]

Michael: be glad you lost out on that $801 ST-1200HD machine, I think that's way too much money even if the machine is really in as great a condition as the seller says (his auction sure is a good example of salesmanship, though)! You can easily find a good-condition Elmo for $300-$400 at the most - I picked mine up for $264 and picked up a set of new belts as well, and now it runs like a charm. [Smile]
