Hello-just joined this group to ask for some help.
I have an Elmo 912 editor whose right crank is not working properly. I have opened it up and there is not much there-3 gears that run together when the handle is turned.

However, the left most gear seems to be the reason why this crank handle is not working and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

If you have one of these units, would you contact me so I can call you, tell you what my unit is doing and you can tell me what your working unit is doing correctly. This seems such an easy fix, but I'm baffled.

Thank you,

Steve D.

I think I know what your talking about. When you crank it does start to move but then snaps forward as if it changed gears? If that's the problem, I think tightening up the Philips head screws in the crank solves that. Thats what the issue was with mine.

I don't think this is a problem with the rewind crank itself. You can check - does it only "slip" when feeding film thru the viewer itself, or does it do it when it you just rewind from "reel to reel" without going thru the viewer? If it only does it when feeding thru the viewer, then I think you will find that cog that the film locates on as it passes thru the viewer "gate" is slipping. You can adjust this by turning the knurled adjustment screw attached to the cog (item 5 & 6 in the manual). It is also worth spraying the cog mechanism with WD40. (See the attached manual for more information).

Hope it helps.

Great, looks like some folks have the same unit.

When you open the right crank up there are three gears.
The top gear I will call #1, is attached to the stem where you put your reel of film. It turns freely.

Gear #2 is on the left side. This is the one I appear to have a problem with. The gear has a threaded screw and appears to be a one piece unit. When screwed in, it fits in the teeth of gear #1, and in the teeth of gear #3. Gear #3 turns, when you turn the crank.

Here is the problem. Gear #2 as I mentioned is a threaded screw. When I screw it in so it is sitting between the teeth of gear #1 and gear #3, I have limited cranking I can do. One direction screws it in and once in all of the way it cannot turn anymore. Turn the crank handle the other way and after a few turns the screw unscrews itself and is no longer between the two other gears and the film spindle will no longer turn.

This gear #2 screw would work if the screw and gear were not a single component. I thought this might be a two piece unit that is suppose to rotate freely and the screw is used to hold it in place.

If someone who has this unit could open theirs up and tell me what this gear #2 is doing in their working unit.

When this originally stopped working, there all kind of debris I had to clean out. Not certain if some other part may have disintegrated inside of this or not.

Thanks again,

Steve

Steve, In my machine the left hand gear that you refer to being "a single component" is not, in fact a single component.
It is a brass gear wheel, held in place on the top of its support column by a steel screw around the shank of which it rotates. The screw does not turn with the gear wheel.

It sounds as if...
1. the screw and gear are stuck together by grease, or
2. someone has replaced the screw with one that is too large for the hole in the gear.

Here is a picture of my unit..

 -
Sorry its a bit small, my camera cannot work closer.
I should add that my unit was bought new and this is the first time I have actually opened the rewind head. Whats more, there is only a smear of grease on my gearing; it sounds as if somebody has been at yours if it was full of debris!..

Martin,

Thanks for the reply and the photo.

I am going to put a pair of pliers and larger screwdriver to mine. I cannot see a seam where these would be two separate items, yet I was thinking the same it must rotate.

Does your screw fasten tightly to the gear and is there anything between the back of the gear and post it screws to?

Got it separated and some emery cloth has the screw shaft spinning freely once again.

Martin, thanks for your help again.
