Precious Images (Reflections USA)(1986, 1x200', Derann Film Services)

This short was compiled to celebrate 100 years of American Cinema. It is a mind boggling collection of about 450 clips roughly a second in length with music tracks tying it all into groups of comedies, romances, musicals, westerns, action and war films. My intro to the family was "I'm about to show everyone their favorite film. You'll only see it if you don't blink!"

For fans of digest reels, this may be the ultimate! It seems to have basically digested everything!

There are a couple of things that are interesting about this film. One of them is that in Super-8 it is not sold under its original title. Derann dubbed it "Reflections USA" to go along with their other film "Reflections", which is a similar compilation of British films.

Another interesting thing is the viewing experience here. There is a lot of audience involvement since people keep recognizing clips and shouting out the titles. To me this makes it an excellent warmup reel at the beginning of a show.

My print is on the OK side of average, yet not spectacular. It has that blue look which is very prominent in later Deranns. Considering the library full of source materials involved, image quality is variable to say the least.

The sound level tends to pulsate a little, not too bad. There are films where this might be annoying, but this entire film is an act of pulsation, so this is just more of the same.

This is a list of titles I managed to snag of the 'net. I know for a fact they aren't in order, and also it would take months to make them so. (Anyone?...Anyone?)

Great review and MAJOR KUDO's for actually taking the time to list all the clips! (good heavens!!).

My thought? Slow down the film to a crawl, (12 fps?) to actually see most of the clips! Screw the sound! [Big Grin]

Actually, I "cheated."

-the clips are listed in the IMDB page for Precious Images, apparently in the order of production. This was strictly copy and paste.

The pace is so fast that by the time your brain tells your mouth what to say, you've already on to the next clip!

It's interesting, every once in a while they slow it down just for one clip and hang on a couple of seconds. Some of these are Julie Andrews dancing on the mountainside in "The Sound of Music" and Tom Hanks looking out over the Bayou in "Forest Gump".

I actually worked on this. Everything came from 35mm prints from what I remember. It was interesting the Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was printed as a Technicolor print with only black and white making the blacks very opaque. King and I was not included as it was on Fox perfs and couldn't be duplicated.

Do you have a print?

It would be a shame if you didn't!

I seem to recall that classic sequence from "The King and I" where Anna and the King are dancing together (Shall we Dance?) in this film. Then again I passed 50 a few years ago and I shouldn't completely trust my memory. (For example, I am driving with my spare set of keys this week...)

-I will check it out.

It turns out his film has two editions: 1986 and 1996. This goes a long way to explain the three post 1986 films listed above. I also recall a little Roger Rabbit (1988) in there so I'm calling my print the 1996 cut. Is it possible this explains the King and I being included?

I screened it again:

"Roger Rabbit" was indeed there, so this print is the 1996 edition.

BTW: "The King and I" was as well.

There is one quick shot of perhaps 5th Avenue NYC that shows time lapse of city traffic. This image is from the non verbal Godfrey Reggio film Koyaanisqatsi but is not on the list

It has been a while since I've seen reflections USA but I'm almost certain I'm right about this

Thankfully naming the extracts was NOT one of Adrian's questions at the Blackpool Dinner quiz. If it had been we would have never got to the last course.
