I have a CIR M3 splicer which I've had for years and it has the name 'Cherrills' etched on the handle which I always thought to be the name of a woman editing operative and that she had engraved her name on it so that it was readily recognised as the one she was responsible for.
However after watching a film recently I noticed in the end credits that the film had been re-recorded at Twickenham Studios, Middlesex and Roger Cherrills Ltd., 65 Dean Street, London W.1.
I'm now thinking that this splicer has come from this film company and I wonder if anyone on the forum had any dealings or perhaps worked for Cherrills and if they are still in business?

Terry, Roger Cherill was a film editor, who cut some of the Norman Wisdom films as well as Billy Liar, and worked in the sound department on other films including Full Metal Jacket. As you say, at some point he set up a company in his name.

I edited a film at Goldcrest in 1999/2000 and much of their film editing equipment was second hand, some from Elstree and also many items marked Roger Cherill, so I assumed that he must have closed his company at some point and Goldcrest bought his equipment.

In turn, much of this gear was going in skips at the time I worked there, and I saved as much as possible for collectors, so it may be one of the ones I saved that you have there!

Thanks for that info Chris and well done for rescuing the equipment. The splicer I have is of course in well used condition and I have since replaced the blade, but it works fine.
Incidentally the film I watched where I saw the Roger Cherrill credit was Jesus of Nazareth, starring Robert Powell, who gave a truly memorable performance as Jesus.
