Jan,

Your link takes me to a log in page. Can you give a summary of what's up?

Someone on the 16mm forum:

"Does anyone know the prints Derann sells stating -stunning colour print, are they l.p.p. or what?Everytime i send an email asking a question about a particular film no answer, besides the one time i inquired on availability?"

Me:

"Paul,

when emailing Derann make sure you put 'DFS' in the subject line (at the beginning). Otherwise their servers delete the message immediately and it's never seen by them. They were forced to do this as as countermeasure to rising waves of spam."

Someone else:

"Hi Jan,

Are you kidding?!?!? How in the world is anybody supposed to know how to do that?!?!

Yet anther stupid, ill-conceived attempt to control SPAM at the expense of throwing away legitimate email. Try to imagine what the world would be like if Citibank implemented this for their paper mail. When you mail your payment in to them, they quietly throw it away because you didn't draw a smiley face in the lower right corner (the secret to getting past Citibank's "junk mail control")! They don't bother to tell you to do this, somehow YOU are supposed to just know it.......

-Mike"

Me again:

"I'm dead serious... Your point is perfectly well made, though (and I can't answer the question of how people are supposed to know this). You're right... it would help if they put up a little notice on the front page of their website. Confused
The reason why I know this is that two of the Derann people are members at the Film-Tech 8mm forum and have made posts there letting the other members know about it."

Well they got that wrong! The Derann staff have only just joined and it was me about a year ago that put a posting on this forum advising that mambers should put DFS in any emails to Derann, at their request.

Yes it was due to the amount of spam and lets face it spam is on the increase.

If this is a way of Derann getting round the spam problem then I think we should respect their wishes and carry on doing it. When ever I mail the guys at Derann I do insert "DFS" in the subject line and I do get a reply from them. [Smile]

I really cant understand why people should want to gripe about this.....what extra effort is it to put three extra letters in a subject line unless they forgot and didnt get that film they wanted on a Derann list!!!

Kev.

You're right on all counts Kevin, of course! But this is coming from the guys at the 16mm forum (not our 16mm area but a completely different forum site). I'm sure "we" don't have a problem with Derann's way of doing this [Smile] but they do. And to be perfectly honest they do have a point in asking how they were supposed to know about it when nobody told them - which, most likely, nobody did. [Eek!]
That's why I brought this issue up in here, with the thought that Derann might want to consider putting up an appropriate notice on their website, as I had suggested on the 16mm forum. This way everybody would know to put DFS in their emails, not just people who happen to be members around here. That's all [Cool]

P.S.: didn't realize you made the request on Derann's behalf, Kevin, long before Adrian and Gary ever joined here. Oops [Eek!]

No worries. The problem for them is that I think that if they put it on their website they will open themselves to more spam.

For instance there are people who just trawl websites like this one looking for email addresses to spam which is why I have said in the past not to actually put your email address up on the forum but to use the private mail we have here for relaying email address to other interested parties.

It's all a game of trying to be one step a head of these burks that like to give you a hard time.

If Derann tell people what to ddo on their website then the spammers are straight in again.

I think that if Gary and Adrian were aware of this probelm on the other site, which they probably dont use, then they would have put it right for the members there too.
They just dont have the time to use all the forums connected with film and DVD.

I know it looks like I'm well into suporting Derann but it's just that I had along chat recently with Gary and can really understand what these guys are up against.

Kev.

I understand, and I too appreciate what Derann is having to cope with, so no worries there. Well, I guess now that I mentioned the whole 'DFS' thing over at the 16mm forum, hopefully some more people will be enlightened. I might even make a new post there about it and ask for it to be pinned (or just email the moderator). Speaking of moderator, later this summer the forum site is going to be moved and relaunched by its then-new owner Larry Urbanski. Which is a good thing since (I believe) he's more aware of what goes on around here & at Derann than most of the 16mm people are. [Smile]
