Hello Chaps
This is very off topic and I was never intending to do a travelogue of my adventures during my year out but as Kevin and Doug both kindly expressed an interest in another post, here is a brief summary of our movements since our mini cine fest in Dougs apartment in NYC.
After a few days in the city we took the train out to Pennsilvania where we met up with our good friends Tom and Kathy, we stayed with them in their house on the Delaware river for a week and then spent a couple of days at their Lake House, which I have to say took me back to one of my favorite movies; On Golden Pond. We had a great time in Pennsilvania, what a beautiful State, I had no idea. We visited the site of the original Woodstock Festival and had our photos taken by the plaque ( well it had to be done). Also went Kayaking on the Delaware and I have to admit to capsising even before I had left the bank, damaged pride but no other injuries I'm pleased to say!
From Pennsilvania we headed back to NYC and then flew to Vancouver to meet up with my Cousins there. Had a great week as their guests, Vancouver remains my favourite city, somewhere I would happily move to. Also managed to meet up with my brother as he was just coming to the end of a trip across Canada, it was a surprise for him because he thought we were still in Central America! Checked out a great camera store in town, can't remember the name but it was a real proffessional set up and even had some new old stock super 8 gear, but don't get excited, it was some pretty obscure stuff including some super 8 projection cartridges (!) and some items in Eumig boxes that were tantalisingly hidden away in a glass cabinet. I didn't ask what they were, for fear of having to buy them simply because they were in their boxes (regular readers will know about my obsession with original packaging).
From Vancouver we flew to London and had two days in the UK during which time I celebrated my 40th birthday with a gathering of about 30 family and friends in a restaurant in Worthing, had a great evening during which I got a little too drunk and was still suffering when we set off in the car with two more friends for our trip across France and Italy and ultimately to Greece.
Had a few great days staying with some friends in their farmhouse near Vichy in Southern France, they are real wine connoseurs, something I proffess to know nothing about but I was very happy to sample all wines that came my way. Also ate rather too much of that rather too nice French Cheese and Bread!
Fully bloated we then set off in the car for Bologna where we had a couple of days and nights exploring the city and enjoying the wonderful nightlife and Italian cuisine. And then to Ancona to pick up the ferry.
After 22 hours on the ferry we landed in Patra and then drove the short distance to Kalini (?) to pick up the ferry to Zante where we spent a week in recently renovated farmhouse overlooking the sea. It was difficult to leave there, the setting was idylic and the swimming pool was just to inviting.
Ate rather a lot of local produce and drank rather too much of the local beer before taking the ferry back to the mainland and then heading off to Athens and the ferry to Mykonos.
Have now based ourselves on Mykonos, having rented a little house here for the next couple of months and have a busy schedule entertaining family and friends who are taking advantage of the spare room! Mykonos is pretty central to the Cyclades and so ideal for striking off and exploring the other islands, haven't quite got round to that yet though as there are still several tavernas that we haven't fully investigated here and plenty more local beer that needs to be sampled!
So, getting to the end of this wonderful year out, something I would reccomend to any one, who like me found themselves facing a mid life crisis. I can confidently say that 10 months on the crisis has been averted and the next forty years is looking good!
On the way back to the UK we're hoping to catch up with some more friends in Italy and France but that's another story...
Mike

Hi Mike, Glad you enjoyed Pennsylvania. It was the first state I moved to from the UK, and I lived there for 10 years in Williamsport Pa, before moving to Florida. It is a beautiful state any time, but totally stunning in the fall when the leaves turn red and gold. I still miss it very much, but will be going back for a trip there in a few weeks.

Hello Guys
Thanks for the replies, I have to report that we continue with the arduous business of getting up, going to the beach, coming home, having G&T on the terrace and then heading out to check out a new Taverner. It's terrible!

I wish, it all sounds good, and indeed it has been, but we have very much had to do it all on a budget. Our best deals so far have been in Asia where we were able to get great beach-side bungalows for just $2.50 a night, in the same resorts we managed to eat out and have a few beers all for less that $3.00 a head. Not bad eh?! Funny thin is that quite alot of the time it's been cheaper to be away than it would have been to stay at home!

Yep, it'll all be over all to soon, but I'm looking forward to getting into a bit of a routine again, well that's not to say that Sleeping going to the beach and then drinking a G&T on the terrace isn't... , very much looking forward to catching up with you guys at the BFCC though.

Pennsilvania must be Americas best kept secret, I can't claim to have travelled widly in the States, mostly been to Florida, NY, MA and Cape Cod in the past but have to say that we were blown away with Pensilvania and shall certainly be making a return visit.

Don't be envious, do it! I never thought I would, but am so glad I have!

I'll be back...

Not to noisey yet, but getting more busy as the weeks go by. We have managed to rent a place which is quite rural and off the beaten track, so can pick and choose when we want the hussle and bussle of the town. Hoping to make a trip across to Paros in the next week or so, I hear it's quieter there?
So there we are guys. Not quite at the end of the great year out yet but on the homeward run now.
If there are anymore developments I'll keep you posted, but for now, I'm off to Mykonos' great open air cinema to watch "Pride".
Best
Mike
