A few photos of the lamp that was fitted to a Ernemann 2 projector
 -
The lamp is a 24 volt 300 watt when I first fitted the heat was such that it cracked the holder. I fitted a different type and modified a heat sink attachment it has worked well since. That type of lamp are designed to run hot with a minumum of cooling.
 -
"Blast Off" [Smile] The projector in action its amazing the brightness of the picture considering the wattage of the lamp the picture quality from this old machine is great in a class of its own.
 -
Just prior to "Blast Off" threaded and ready to go [Cool]

Graham,

Congratulations on the upgrade! [Smile]
A neat method to project
in this special format.

It's wonderful to see an
old workhorse put back
in shape for reliable
fun film programs.

Thanks Michael
It was a most interesting project and one that I could not have done without help, although I managed most of the work myself, getting the sound working out of the old Fisher sound head, "you can just see in the photo", was critical, luckly I had help from a chap who was very clued up on sound systems he fitted a new photo electric cell, plus he very kindly donated an old and very large power supply for the exciter lamp, he also made the pre-amp, there was no guarantee that any of this was going to work.

I spent a lot of time alinging the lamp in the exact same position where the carbon arcs used to be. The big plus was being able to adjust the 8 inch mirror in relation to the lamp and getting the light to concentrate towards the gate, the end result was excellent. All the work payed off when we ran the projector for the first time with both picture and sound. I just couldn't believe it, here was this old projector from the 1920s giving me a bright, rock steady pin sharp picture, plus sound quality that I have never heard from Super8 or 16mm, although only mono sounded great. Its a great thrill threading and running the old projector.

Regards Graham [Smile]

Graham,

Now you have entered into the
hallowed corridors of Film Projector
Modifications, just curious on
how many hours were invested into
this project?

I wonder if any forum members delve into 70mm, now that would be something [Wink] I was told of a film collector in the North Island who a few years ago projected a reel of 70mm film of the chariot race from "Ben Hur" in his garage I understand those attending were most impressed [Smile]

Michael
Dont no the exact amount of time but it was over a few years I was going to use the projector as a museum exhibit but it was suggested by friends that I should get it going luckily the projector was still in very good condition also I had to build a new projection box to house it, that in itself took about 3 months to build.

Michael I guess I like to tinker probably goes back to my childhood when I wired up an old reel to reel my brother had to our valve radio, only problem was the radio had a live chassis which I found out after switching things on to the mains. I remember the loud BANG [Eek!] and the house in total darkness I quickly discovered that speakers dont work to well with mains voltage, I remember my older brother threating to kill me or words to that effect, I still tinker but have a healthy respect for electricity.

Thanks very very much what a fantastic site. It was most interesting to read that 70mm in private use is not uncommon, and that the DP70 projector was used in Christchurch at the Cinerama theatre, where I remember films like Dr Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter being projected in 70mm in the 70s. thanks again.
