I have a new laptop with Vista preinstalled.

I want to reformat the hard drive, erase vista, and install XP. It won't let me do it. When I attempt to run the XP install disc, the option to install the program is whited out.

Help please.

The broadband provider through my cell phone via usb cable does not have updated vista software, but will run with XP.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chip,Do you have the Vista disc,if so you should be able to wipe the harddrive using that disc, then whip it out and then proceed with XP.

Vista is not a wise choice at the moment as it's full of bugs and alot of programs won't run on it.

I'm with Peter on that one. I wouldnt touch Vist for the moment it's too buggy. Having said that I probably wont at all as I'm now a converted Mac (intel) user. No bugs, virus's and best of all no updates every time I turn my machine on [Big Grin]

I guess you are one of the lucky ones. At work I have had numerous problems with XP but some of it is down to the applications you run with it. It seems that sometimes Microsoft do their updates and it has an impact on something else.

Give me Mac OSX anytime [Smile]

Hi,

get yourself a Linux- or FreeDos-live-CD with "fdisk". This way you can remove the old partition and create a new FAT-partition. XP will install into this empty partition and will also ask if you wan to switch to NTFS...

Hello to all.

Thank you for your comments and help.

It was completed this week working part time. Although a couple of bugs remain as follows:

1. XP Upgrade disc installed OK.

2. Formatted to NTFS system for Drice C: partition OK.

3. Installed XP OK.

4. Lost built in memory card reader to the Acer 3690 laptop. This is somewhat OK as I have a Lexar add on multi card reader working perfectly via USB.

5. Lost sound card drivers - downloaded for XP from the Acer website OK.

6. The only bug I can not figure out as follows:

Upon SHUTDOWN menu, the "STANDBY" button is grayed out and will not work. This is also somewhat OK as I never have the need to use it, so I guess I can live with it grayed out. My question is would leaving it this way result in an unexpected crash in the future. If no, than I'm OK with it. But in reality I know this is not right and should be fixed.

7. Connecting to the Internet and registering XP worked OK but I was surprised that I had to actually do it.

Any additional comments here or to my private email address ( prfcg2@aol.com ) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Chip
