Deear all,
I am lately crazy over Epic war movies which were produced after 1990s.
I have known these titles: Brave Heart, Kingdoms of Heaven, King Arthur, Troy, Helen of Troy, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Alexander, 300.
But can you help me out to add the above list. Some rules that have to be followed are:
1. Made after 1990s (due to the pics and sound quality) 2. Based on history (no matter it is true or not) 3. A mythology is not counted (so Lord of the Rings and sort of are out) 4. Not a modern war 5. Hit the blockbuster/not MTV (made for TV).
I believe that members here who have a very broad knowledges on movies will be able to help me.
ps: using imdb does not help, becuase the results are go to far from my rules above.
thanks

"A Midnight Clear" early 1990's. Not an epic, (as it's only 90 minutes) but it is based on fact about an I&R platoon sent ahead in the German wilderness, to find out when Germanys last big push is coming.
They come upon an abandoned Chateau with some canned foods, wine, ect, so at least they'll be in comfort for awhile. They come upon a lost german outpost, made up of old men and young teen boys who want to surrender. They know the end of the war is coming quick. They want to be taken in a fake skirmish, so that they don't just lose face by surrendering without a fight.
The film has a tragic ending.
It slipped under everyones "radar" but it is a magnificent film. Slow moving, not an action epic, but just as moving as the beginning of Saving Private Ryan.
But why just limit it to 1990's? There's "Das Boot" from the early 1980's, as well as "The Big Red One" (directors cut) and lets not forget, "Cross of Iron" by the great bloody director Sam Peckipah!

So now the list (without any particular order):
- Brave Heart - Kingdoms of Heaven - King Arthur - Troy - Helen of Troy - The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Alexander - 300 - Gladiator - Gettysburg - Gods and Generals - The Last of the Mohicans -
Thanks Mark, definetely Gladiator is in. Now you can see my list added with your input.
Osi, I am not looking those modern wars (where airplane has been used, for example). So any WWI or WWII are out
The reason why I am listing only pre-modern wars, just merely so I can follow the history without need reading too many books
(ps: I will make another list for pre 1980s to accomodate Ben Hur, Spartacus, Fall of Roman Empire and sort of in other post)
Other members, can you add my list above please. OK I am widening the production release to be 1980s until now.
cheers,

Trust me, my friend, you can't just trust even older style war movies for "historical accuracy". For instance, in a lot of modern early action films, "troy" or film like that, femaile warriors are prominently shown, as it is popular with audiences, but women warriors were all but non-existent, so there are many elements added to the modern "old war" film.
