One of the quirks of working in a print bindery, as I do is the number of odd magazines that are available to read during quiet moments. So, here from the pages of Gateshead Council News is the information that the multi storey car park erected in 1969 and famously featured in the 1971 British gangster classic Get Carter is to be demolished as part of the regeneration of the town centre. The development company, wholly owned by Tesco (no surprises there then) held a guided tour of the place for local citizens - hard hats the order of the day. Apparently there was originally to be a rooftop restaurant and nightclub, but that never happened.

Paul,
Pity really that such structures just get wiped out, regardless of cinematic history.
I am reminded of the Battersea power plant, featured so prominently with the suspended pig on the cover of Pink Floyd's album. For years, it seemed like everyone wanted the place demolished, but I guess now (I don't live in England) it has been put to some kind of mixed use.
Best, Claus.

Battersea power station is now the Tate Gallery and its big central space features many weird and wonderful - and large - exhibits.

Its a shame that the car park is going as 'Get Carter' is one of my favourite films (love to know if it ever made it out on Super 8). Apparently, though, everyone near the car park hated it and thought it was a monstrosity.
