That is a good question.
What I learned of laser rot, is it had something to do with the two sides being pressed together. Since DVD is single sided in most cases but dual layers, there shouldn't be any glue to go bad. But do correct me if I am wrong.
What I do NOT like about DVD is the inconsistency of how a DVD is mastered. There are discs out there which can really only play the movies on them, or the extra videos included. This means you have to access the individual items as you wish to see them. The programming functions (say you wanted to watch the trailer for the film, and then the film right after that) will not work properly, and/or cause disaster results:
My disc of BACHELOR PARTY with Tom Hanks. If I program the movie trailer right before the movie, the software kills power to the player between the two choices.
My disc of MONSTERS INC can not be programmed at all with any of my players. Error messages simply come up after programmed play is set to go.
Programming a player is the most professional way of running a show. It gives a nice dark black screen between the choices. Sure, this can be done manually, but you have to deal with the search times and the menu graphics.
While I do love DVD, these problems are really strange. Atleast when you have a good print on super 8 or 16mm with a good machine, it runs when you thread it.
