all looks good on this unit but look at the 19th picture it shows a completely different bulb installed, then what is extra did they make 2 kinds of bulbs for this unit?

A later version of this projector was available with a Quartz Halogen bulb and there were factory conversion kits available to upgrade older machines. All of the earlier series projectors like this one were equipped with the so-called 'spaceman' bulb (these bulbs are still available although often a bit pricey - they're CXR 8V/50W). The large bulb shown installed in this machine seems to fit, but I'm almost certain it wasn't intended for such use. There's more detailed information about the 18-5L Super 8 model and various lamp options at http://www.bolexcollector.com/projectors/185l.html

Hi the bulb that is shown as installed is the original 8v50w model lamp that was replaced by the silver sealed beam unit shown in the other pictures as a spare. Later (super 8mm) models used a similar looking bulb with a 75w rating which could be replace by a QI version with a built in reflector or an adapter could be fitted for the 75w QI bulb common to other s8 projectors of the time. Some later models used the common 75 w QI lamp exclusively.Adapters were available to upgrade earlier models. There doesn't seem to be much different in the design of the various 18-5 projectors so maybe it is possible to upgrade the8v 50w to the later brighter QI bulbs without concerns about the cooling etc.

Thanks for the correction. I've owned several of these sturdy little projectors and hadn't seen the lamp that's installed in this example.

Hi Glen I'm not surprised that you have never seen the early 8v 50 w bulb. My first std 8 projector had one installed when new but when I needed to replace it the silver style replacement lamps were the only ones available. I haven't seen one since. There was a QI lamp with a built in reflector that could also be used in the early 18-5's but they were discontinued years ago. Which is a shame as they out perform the silver style which is still easily available

Can't remember the code for the 8v50w QI (or was it halogen?) remember the ads in cine magazines but never owned one. I'll trawl through the old mags I have for an ad.
