I was reading on another topic regarding the failure of the coffee machine on the final days of Derann. It reminded me of long ago in the late 70s when we had a visit of a US Airforce Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. It was parked close to where I used to work. In those days security was almost non existant so got the old Super8 camera out and took some film of it. While yours truly was shooting away an american crewman invited both myself and another workmate if we wanted to have a look around. This was one big aircraft...so we did. They were getting ready for departure so we had to be quiet on the flight deck as they were doing there sums ...anyway as we were being shown around, it was pointed out on this multi-million dollar aircraft the most important item up on the flight deck was the "Coffee Machine"...I never fogot the importance they placed on that thing.
One other wee story of those long ago days was the visit of a US Air Force KC-10, thats the flying re-fueling tanker its the military version of the DC10... I noticed crates and crates of New Zealand beer sitting next to it. One of the american crew said if I gave them a hand loading the beer he would show us around....so I did, so I guess New Zealand beer was more popular than the usual stuff they had to deal with. The look around afterwards was well worth it.
A Galaxy down in Antartica they would fly from here every so often.
Over the many years flights to the ice were carried out also by the Starlifter. There was an interesting article in the local paper when the kids heard of the final flight of the Starlifter the flight path wasover there school "aircraft to be retired" so the kids made drawings of it and sent them to the base commander. Impressed he sent the flight crew to visit the school and meet the kids.....the crew were big hit.
